Sloppy steering and gear changing

Post by Other-Power »

Hi all

1981 1.6 n/a d westy camper lowered 100mm front 60mm back (not by me!)

Cart alloys 205/70/14 tyres with good treed.

When i got the van back in JAN 07 the steering was responsive but now it is pulling to the left a bit and the steering wheel has 5-8cm of movement before it turns the wheels. I had it up on a ramp not to long ago <4000 miles and the movement was not in the steering rack. What bushes will i need for replacing, i am prepared to spend the time / money to do the job propper like. do i just need the steering rack ones from here
http://www.aumb39.dsl.pipex.com/brickwe ... h/bush.htm

Also the gear change is getting a bit sloppy. I do need to change the gear box oil at some point as i dont know how many miles its done and suspect its done to many pulling my heavy camper.

Were am i to be looking for tightening the links?

Thanks for the help in advance

Jon

may be best to start by laying underneath and getting somebody to turn the steering wheel in each direction. Also jack up each wheel, grab the wheel top and bottom and feel for any movement. Then grab it either side and repeat.
