Do I need a new engine ?

Post by Bigplatty »

After a 14 year break from VWs and Aircooled engines, I have bought a 1981 devon pop top with a 2ltr Aircooled engine. (Needs a little TLC but I gotta say its super cool.)
We took her on it maiden voyage last weekend, up some hills she managed to get a top speed of 14 mph!
Now I know these motors are not built for racing but surely it should have more get up and go than this.
The engine runs as sweet as a nut no smoke starts first time.

Any advice is welcome.

I had a look, it seems quite clean. The Dizzy cap was in a bad state replaced that still the same.
Runs fine and dandy on a straight

I've got a 2litre '82 and I've just averaged 65 all the way.

Slowest hill was 50.

Try the vacum advance setup. make sure the mechanical side works as well as the vacum.

i`d have thought you need to change the engine. its airfooled!! err sorry Aircooled  put a more upto date lump in there, you wont have to worry about hypothermia or doing a massive 13 mpg on a run(crawl) :rofl

Similar story to the_blue I have a 2litre CU '81 and travel along happily at motorway speeds. It has to be a biggy to slow me down to 50.

Think I may have found the issue. Looks like there is a circlip missing from the rear retainer on accelerator cable, so the carbs are not opening fully. luckily I live near some good hills for testing, called the peak district. Hope it works or there may be a few annoyed people tomorrow.
