Right, i am changing or at least trying to change the back silencer.

where im at is all the bolts are out and the 2 retaining straps are unbolted, now how the ruddy hell do you get it out and the new one in? am i missing something really simple?

Oh, before anyone shouts at me i forgot to say, its a 1.9dg 1987 (newer style) exhaust. inlet to backbox at opposite end to silencer

which system , early one has the j pipes that connect to the box via 6 bolts
late has all manner of pipes and i think the box has 3 nuts holding it on and the then the supports

i thought it should just slide out but that seems a no go, its that tight that if i did get it out i would never get the new one in.

update, its off.

just used a little bit more brute force and ingnorance og the grab twist and pull type, stanging beside the van holding the tailpipe rather than lying under it.

woodfest indeed is looming, and so far the van is exhaustless and hasnt moved off the drive in a week cos battery is flat too.

could be worse Wendy , there could be only a few bolts holding the engine in and another one in the van waiting to be fitted :lol:

hope the new one goes on easier than taking off the old one, worth checking tightness of the nuts/bolts after its run for a while with the new one on, and nipping up any that seem loose after the exhaust has settled a bit. my new one had tell tale signs of soot, where it had been blowing slightly. took a few 're-tighten-and-run it for a bit' attempts til it was leak free :)

before i fit the new bits tomorrow do i need to clea\n up the flanges or use any sort of gasket paste? or do i just tighten up with the supplied gaskets in place?
