Speedo cable question...

Post by The_blue »

My speedo died. :(

There was a clunking under the front and it stopped working.

I've had a look and the cable pulled out the stearing knuckle and has a box shapped head on it then sleave. I'm guessing it should have something in between as its a but rough behind the tip.

Anyone got a picture of a cable end?

Also can anyone work out which cable i need on vagcat? I think it's:-

speedometer drive cable / (steering knuckle > speedometer)
2640MM rhd /
3 251957809

Should this be right?

If its the same as mine it has a square end which pokes through the center of the dust cap on the LH front wheel and is prevented from retracting by a circlip. I had much trouble getting mine out through the steering knuckle because it goes through a TIGHT rubber bung. If you look on the JK site you will find 2 different cables as there are different speedo drives. There is a screw in and a bayonet type attachment. You will need to check your speedo to ensure you have the correct fitment. Don't rely on the age as the speedo may not be original.

assuming you mean speedo cable its basically disconnect the top end which just unclips from the instrument and pull it down from underneath. I think you get a better view if you remove the spare wheel. Try and push the new one up the same path as the old one. I think there is a rubber bung for the point it changes from outside to inside.

There should be a small circlip in the front left hub retaining the speedo cable there. Remove the circlip (not always present) and pull the cable from behind. The cable does go through a very tight bung to get around the steering. I had great troubles with this but others have not even mentioned it. The cable will be cliped in place and it is recommended that you try to locate the new one in about the same place. Again try to put the new one where the old one was. You have to aim the square end of the cable through the square hole in you hub. I don't think I had the wheel jacked up to do this but it may help.

Once the cable end has poped through the hub replace the circlip.

the first one took me a long time but that cable had unwound itself and snapped somewhere. It was about a million miles long by the time I had removed it. The second one I did took very little time.

Fitted one today with no wheel jacking or removal etc. Remove the headlight grill and headlight to gain access to the grommet where the cable comes through the front bulkhead, then just a matter of unclipping from the rear of the speedo, pull through the bulkhead and drop it down past the radiator, undo the 10mm nut holding the cable clip to the bracket, remove the circlip from the cable at the front hub grease-cap where it drives from and pull the cable out the back of the hub. Replacement is the reverse of the above, handy to have someone watch the cable come through the hub grease-cap to align the drive square and put the clip on, then route it back as before. 10 mins :)
Keep it real.
