1900 DG w/c start fault...

Post by fairwynds »

1900 watercooled DG engine was fully rebuilt 8oo miles ago. Carb was reconditioned too.
Since then she has started and run fine.

Now have two issues:

1) When cold and key turned there can be a 'pause' of a second before she fires. Im thinking earth strap but have read with interest the threads on here about starter motor connections etc - will investigate further (is fine when warm)

...and the MAIN prob....is

2) When cold and she fires up, if I take foot off accelerator she dies, just wont idle unless I increase revs for say a minute, then she's fine.
Ive checked pulldown unit, seems ok, and choke was refurbed and seems fine (and has been since rebuild).
Shes just started this problem over last week.

My question.....could it be the little hose to the pulldown unit? Or even good old fashioned damo in the dizzy cap?

Has anyone else had this?

Is everything free moving around the choke mech and check it hasnt slipped round a bit?
And where the pulldown hose fits onto the carb base check that vaccum pipe as mine was blocked and caused probs but it is a teeny tiny hole (smaller than a pin!) as i found out after breaking mine off trying to clean it! Fixed it now tho! Good luck!

Exactly the symptoms I had when my started connection corroded badly. It was the small 'signal' wire from the ignition switch to the starter solenoid that was the problem.

Have a look, you might be lucky. My starter had *TWO* spades on the same terminal (in an L shape), so all I had to do was pull off the old connector (it had rusted on, and pulled the old spade away too!) fit a new one, and push it onto the 'spare' spade.

If that's not it, you may have a sticking solenoid.

As for problem 2, sorry not much help. All I can say is when my vacuum hoses fall off, my DG runs like a dog when cold. Just check they're all tight and leak free.
