temperature on the up 1.6td
any help here would be appreciated before i start chucking money at what its possibly not!!!!, my 1.6td has suddenly had a rise in temperature shown on the gauge from the normal position(just over half) to just under 2/3rds, i have checked all pipes etc and of the 2 on the radiator one is piping hot one is only barely warm, i am quessing at the following dodgy thermostat, sender, water pump, clogged radiator, pos cylinder head gasket(hope not), putting the fan on brings it down a tad but nothing significant, the gauge doesnt rise above 2/3rds even with the cab set to cold any ideas????

I have a 1.6td, when driving around town the gauges sits in the middle as soon as I go up a hill the gauges rises to just under 3/4 - is this normal - I have replaced the radiator (GSF).
I added a tempory switch to turn the radiator fan on hi-speed while going up a hill, but this has little effect.
If I leave the radiator fan running on hi-speed at idle the temperature gauge will not go below half - this leads me to believe that the thermostat works fine (unless it isn't opening 100% and therefore reducing the coolant flow to the radiator).
Has anyone encountered this situation?? Has anyone encountered a thermostat that doesn't open completely??

If your rad is blocked / not doing its job, putting the heater on will cool the engine a bit.
I think the heater is before the thermostat, so even if your stat isnt opening properly or your main coolant pipes are blocked you should see the guage drop a bit.

well my 1.6td sits at abt 1/3 of the way at best and gets to over half on a good long hill.
You may have an air lock ???. if you think this is the case, put the front on the ramps, remove the main grille and then bleed the air out of the radiator by releasing the valve on the top left or right side (cant remember). then run it and try again.
