Temterature

Post by lilly »

Dear Experts,

I am a little worried about the temerature on me van...the picture below shows the temperature after a 40min drive. Is this pretty normal? At this stage the fan had not kicked in. Should the red light be on?

If you think its a problem, where should i start?

Thanks.

40 min drive doing what??
that would be considered normal if stuck in traffic and not much airflow.. but if on the open road at 60mph then I would suspect a problem in the system somewhere.. could be a simple wiring sensor issue.. or the thermostat is sticking and not opening fully.. or something more of a problem.. rad blocked? has anyone put any knind of "rad seal" in the system?
what have water levels done? is it bled correctly..

need to know if any work has been done on the engine/cooling system or problems you may have had..

most vans the normal operating range is around the red LED.. just under to just over it is very normal, some run a little cooler

Looks like a faulty guage to me, unless it`s boiling it`s head off and water escaping everywhere. Normal is with the needle just covering the LED, not much more before the fan cuts in.
Keep it real.

Mine runs with the needle right on the red light in open traffic.
The red light is always off.
In stationary traffic for a while the needle creeps up to where yours is and then when the fan cuts in it goes down again.

Check you have water in the system, and check that the fan comes on when the temp guage is showing as in your picture.
If the fan doesn't come on I would check a fuse or a relay first of all because that's the easist thing to check.
Beyond this, it could be all or some of number of reasons making it run hot including timing, blocked rad, wrong or sticking thermostat etc.
All of these things are reasonable to fix given a methodical approach so don't worry.
Does the engine smell hot ? is it bubbling or sounding uncomfortable ?
If not it may just be a sensor fault but you are right to check it out because if it is running too hot it will eventually caue damage if you don't fix it.
One last thing, if it is running too hot and you are out and about, switching the heater on will most times make the temp guage drop.
Best of luck, don't worry, but don't boil your engine either :)

Mine runs about there. The LPG seems to make it run a bit hotter. Mine doesa climb up to about there on a long incline eg motorway, but drops to just past 12 oclock, normal position.
It does drop a bit when the temp lever is flicked over to HOT to help cool things down a bit.....is this an indication of anything???
It never boils over.......thew needle can get quite high before the fan kicks in.
But then i do seem a bit paranoid about the temperature.
Hope this is of any help

Mine's the same, it sits there, if I put the heaters on it drops down to about the LED, if I do get stuck in trafic the fan kicks in.
it doesn't seem too hot, I decided that it was just a faulty sensor / gauge.

Thanks for all the feedback...I went for a 300 mile round trip at the weekend, and sure enough the needle went relatively high initially, but once on the open road, it dropped down to just shy of the LED.

Worked a treat all weekend...phew!

"normal" according to the handbook that came with my van is "between the two white boxes" dont worry about it, change the temp seder for another and it will sit differently........ mine sits in about the same place as yours, the rad fan kicks in at about 3/4 - but the rad fan works off its own sender in the rad and has bog all to do with engine temp

Sorry to bring this one up again, but I have the same problem, although my gauge doesn't sit as high, but I am using loads of coolant from the fill up tank although the expansion tank is always full as I have never let the fill up tank go empty and still full of the coolant that the garage put in as its bright green, about 1200 miles ago when it was serviced. When I had it serviced I got the garage to check out the problem (again), they put it down to a cracked part which was replaced yet made no difference, althought they checked it fully and couldn't find any other problem. Don't know what the part was it was though. Black and plastic and cheap!

So I know this is not right and its getting a bit hot to keep blowing hot air at myself, so the question is should I take it back to that garage or should I take to a VW buff I know to look at it????????
If its empty re fill it!

Since my 350 mile round trip I have driven the van in reasonably hot weather and still the needle sits to the right of the centre, but as mentioned above, when on the open road, the needle dropt to dead centre, assume it's as a result of the rad valve opening.
I think the reading needles are a little dodgy - my petrol gauge, speedometer, temperature are all a little out of sync. I know this because my TomTom tells me my exact speed which does not match the van and my petrol gauge says there is no petrol, when in fact there is at least ten litres left.

Have you given the van a hard drive on the motorway, that will soon open the rad valve and tell you if there is something wrong.

Rad Valve??
Do you mean thermostat (in the engine compartment) if this doesent open tne engine will boil its socks off.
Do you mean thermoswitch in the radiator? This switches the fan on. Should ony come on stuck in traffic or working the engine very hard on a hot day.

The spedo is mechanical and bears no relationship to the temp guage or fuel guage.

If you need to top up coolant regularly you have a leak, this may prevent the coolant system pressurising and thus working properly. Find it and fix it.

THe guages on every van will vary a little. Get used to the position, and if it suddenly changes WORRY.
