I bought a Stebel twin tone air horn off Fleabay back in January this year & today I finally decided to fit it to the van.
It took ages to get the old horn off because the nuts were seized up. Then
I find that the mounting bolt enclosed with the Stebel is too big to go through the pre-drilled hole in the alloy casing & that the existing wires need to be extended 8 inches to reach the contacts on the bottom end of the new unit.
Finally get the thing fitted & replace the fuse. Time to test the 'Nautilus of horns'......wait for deafening ''BLAST!!!''....not a whimper. All I could hear was the compressor pushing air out of the horn.
I opted to do a straight replacement, off with the old working VW ''fweep'' type & on with the Stebel without using the optional relay. Is the reason for the lack of any 'NOISE' - down to the Stebel needing the relay to make it work? I would like some advice please before I go snipping wires to fit the relay.

ummmm.....thught you needed the single tone for the MOT, and that the dual tone were illegal on the road????
Thought thats why most air horms sit behind the grill or underneath next to the single tone horn??
I got one from the states that has wait for it......80 DIFFERENT SOUNDS incuding cow and the wonderful phrase "move away from the vehicle"!!!!!! You can even record your own.......
Sorry - thread hijacking.....

arguably if you have two constant notes you may get around d ie not varying between two notes, however you may fall foul of point e which says "a constant note", not "notes". leave your existing horn in place for the MOT and operate your other from a switch on the dash?
reasons to fail
a. the horn control missing, insecure or not readily accessible to the driver
Note: Inform the driver if the horn is insecure http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_170.htm
b. the horn does not function
c. the sound emitted by the horn is not loud enough to be heard by another road user
d. a gong, bell, siren or two or more tone horn fitted
Note: When operated, a two or more tone horn automatically produces a sound which alternates at regular intervals between fixed notes
A vehicle is allowed to be fitted with a bell, gong or siren, but not two-tone only as part of an anti-theft device
e. for a vehicle first used on or after 1 August 1973, a sound emitted by the horn is
. not a constant note
. not continuous or uniform
. harsh or grating.
Nice to see you can use a gong as part of an anti theft device though
The seller said to try the horn directly off the battery & if it still doesn't work send it back for a replacement. Will put the old horn back ready to drive to Bus Types. Ho Hum!

Mocki, just checked the box (instruction diagrams/multi lingual but not 'plain' English) in tiny print it states ''12V <18A''. Just for the record the Stebel air horn is a compact unit with a built in compressor so it doen't have air pipes etc.
Does this mean that I should install all new (seperate) wiring/fuse & keep it seperate from the existing horn circuit altogether? Also, which wires connect to the various terminals on the relay & what would be the recommended rating of the inline fuse?

I've had this problem before and I think I've posted here about it. I found that even ordinary standard generic replacement car horns new from Halfords or even a working horn off another car WILL NOT work on a T25. BUT - my T25 horn works on my motorbike and vice versa! I wonder if there's motorcycle type and car type and T25s have m/cycle type???
My solution is to buy horn+relay kit from Halfords and fit using existing T25 horn wiring as 'switch' to signal to relay, and put new wiring in (from fuse box) to actually power horn. Anyone with more electrical knowledge please correct me! (I've bought horn but not got round to fitting yet, otherwise I'd be of more help!!)
Dom.
Thanks for the advice Dom. I've replaced the standard VW horn. I was disconnecting the leisure battery ready to put it on charge when I tested the Stebel horn using two bits of wire. Result, I am now deaf in my right ear, so no need to return the unit to the seller
I am going to put a completely seperate wiring circuit in for the Stebel using the relay provided & an inline fuse. I will also have to install a seperate button/switch to operate it.

Mocki suggested that the wiring to the existing horn is not capable of carrying the power needed to operate the compressor on the Stebel horn. The wiring is rather old now, 23 + years to be precise. I'm going to leave this job until after Bus Types as plenty other jobs to do & only two days to do them.

the wiring oin a 25 is indeed too weak to power the horn compressor, however it certianly is not too weak to power the relay! put the existing horn contacts on to the coil terminals of t he relay, then run a new 12v to one side of the relay, another wire from the other side of the relay to the horn and finally an earth wire from the the -ve of the horn to ground (body work or battery) 5 minute job with the right tools and know how!
