Alternator bolts sheared

Post by dalmationman »

Tried to adjust the alternator belt today and discovered that the alternator mounting bolts are non existent !
They have been sheared off in the block by some previous caring owner.
All that's holding the alternator on is the metal steadying/ adjustment arm.
Can anyobody suggest an easy solution please ???

Sheared alternator mounting bolts

Post by Fritz »

Simply remove all brackets etc in the immediate area, find a couple of slightly oversize washers (centre diameter), then weld the broken/sheared studs to the washers, then weld a couple of 19 mm nuts to the washers,,,,,,,and while still hot unwind the lot from the block. It's a piece of pi$$ realy, if you have the gear to do it.... :D

A decent MIG welder is the secret weapon when solving such problems.

Sounds interesting Fritz.
Coupleof Questions:

The studs are not flush with the block they have snapped off recessed, would yor idea still work?

Why 19mm nuts ?

Have you done this remedy yourself ?

I saw this done some time ago on a cylinder head off an 820 Rover, and just the other day I did a similar thing my self , where the bolts had previously been drilled in the hope of getting them out.

All I am suggesting is a solution to your problem,,,,,If it was mine I'd be having a go at this way of doing things (with the engine in situ)

And the reason I used 19mm nuts is they are large enough to get good penetration (Ohh Err MRS), using the MIG on setting No6 wire speed 30,,,, I was more than happy with the way things went when all around were left scratching their heads as to 'How to do it'

Go for it,,,,,
