speedo works but milometer doesnt,getting desperate

yo folks......ive only just remembered that marladys van is due for mot in july/august,but it hasnt travelled a single yard since last mot(according to the clocks!),is it an easy fix?,i remember reading that its a cog that needs to be glued back on,do i need to strip the clocks out or can i do it on the vehicle...................

Its an easy job.
Remove the binacle then remove speedo.
You will see a worm drive cog which needs to be pushed back into place, glue if needed.
The worm drive that is.

wow what a easy fix!!! ive just done mine so i now have an odometre, cool not had it for 3 years so now i gotta watch the milage as im on limited mile's insurance !!!!!!!!!

christ james....im surprised the dvla havent paid you a visit!!!!!!!!!.......same mileage form 3 years.................................at least it means i can keep an eye on marladys mileage and fuel consumption now...

there is no need for a odometre at all so why would they ??? you dont need any gauges other than full beam warning light, dunno why people think you need anything else??? i only fixed it coz i wouldnt mind a trip metre

theyre just getting a bit more technical now,all computerised so a car with the same mileage for 3 mots might end up getting pulled my the dvlc......owduck

they cant do a thing about it its got nothing to do with them plus as long if i were to sell it which i aint i have to tell them milage unknown, have you noticed on your v5 its optional to put milage upon selling! One other thing i have a subaru engine fitted so millage is totaly wrong for that engine anyway!!!!

Don't want to pour cold water but none of the milometer fixes I've tried have lasted. I've done all the usual pushing cogs back into place, glueing, fitting a little block in place to prevent the cog from popping out. I've had the whole speedo completely to pieces and back together more than once and each time the problem is cured - for about a week.... The basic problem is that the whole assembly is a piece of "pooh"! I can't believe this is up to VWs standards.

I've now replaced the speedo with a secondhand one . Let's see how long this lasts....

well i just drove about 30 miles and mine worked for 0.5 of a mile ha ha of well

Reading these posts suggests then that the problem I have is nothing special but is in fact fairly widespread. The shaft through the mileometer drum keeps moving towards the gear end and falling out of the 'bearing' at the other end. When this happens the numbers are all skewed and it stops counting.

Are there any lasting fixes for this?
