SLiding door opening whilst driving..Please Can Anyone Help?

Post by MattyGreg05 »

Good Morning all and Happy Easter.

I am experiencing problems with the sliding door on my panel van.
It is coming open whilst driving even when it is locked.
Has anyone experienced this and/or dos anyone who why it happens and how i can fix it?

Just fixed mine from doing this! Mine was comming open when driving - not totally, but enough to make it uneasy to have passengers in the back! The cause was a worn catch - the bit that is attached to the back edge of the sliding door - even if it didnt look worn when I took it off. You might need to phone around a bit to get the right catch as there are apparently two or three different ones. I got mine from Volkspares in B'ham - very helpful. Cost £15. Easy to fit though - just undo the two phillips bolts with a large s/driver, having first disconnected the circlip that attaches the thin metal bar that leads to the front handle (you will need to take off the internal door panel first). Hope you get it fixed!

I also had the problem. It seemed no amount of fiddling with the post on the door frame (body) would keep it locked. I finally sussed it by raising the post to it's highest position and it worked. Been good for over a year now.

VW Part Number

Post by VWlewis »

I have just done this job - you need a new part since used ones will be worn and not worth using.

I got my new one from my local VW Dealer Spares Dept: The part number for a left side sliding door on a 1989 model caravelle is 252843603A and cost £16.66 +VAT

It is a great time to clean all the muck out, regrease the channel and sort out any rust on the channel hidden under the cover panel. :D
