Suitability of Passat engine for t25

Post by Andrewrowson »

Hi I’m looking to buy my first t25 and one of the vehicles at looking at has had a Passat engine installed in it. The owner doesn’t have the paperwork relating to this but is able to tell me where and when it was done.

How suitable is a Passat engine for a t25 and what questions should I be asking the seller about it?

any advice much appreciated

Suitability of Passat engine for t25

Post by clift_d »

It would depend on both the engine and the installation - Passats at various times had CY, SB, RA, 1Y and AAZ engines which have all been used over the years for plenty of T25 diesel engine conversions.

The CY 1.6TD engine is pretty much the same engine as the OEM JX and so there shouldn't be much difference with it if fitted with JX ancillaries.

The SB/RA 1.6TD engines can give you a bit more HP than the OEM JX, although they really need to have extra cooling installed and use the SB/RA injectors and pump to get the extra performance.

The 1Y 1.9NA was a pretty common replacement for the OEM diesels, and there are plenty of conversions using the AAZ 1.9TD, both generally using JX ancillaries.

Assuming that its a diesel and not a 1.8 or 2.0 petrol engine, same EA827 basic architecture.

I‘ll need to leave it to others to provide info on petrol motors - the little I know about engines is limited to diesels.

Its almost certainly a 1.9 AAZ or similar, to the OP this is VW LEGO in the engine dept.

Agreed on the likelihood of it being a diesel but I’m running a 2.0 16v ABF in my DOKA. This was an option in the passat.

I'd ask the seller for the exact engine code first as this will tell you far more than just knowing it came from a Passat. Check how the engine mounts, cooling system and wiring have been adapted and look for oil leaks around the sump and engine conversion parts. Also make sure the engine number and capacity match the V5C as an undocumented conversion could cause problems with insurance.
