Fitting Speedshop Exhaust Issue.

Post by maxstu »

I'm in the process of fitting a used Speedshop stainless exhaust system. I bought this secondhand. It has the usual staining but looks to be in great condition.

However, two issues. To fit No4 manifold one has to remove oil filter. Not a big deal. Once in place it is solved.

But the bigger concern is the No4 manifold touches the metal coolant pipe. Now is that it going to transfer heat to the cooling system?

And there's me preparing for a grand tour of either Spain or Poland next summer. Do l really need to add extra heat? Especially if queueing in summer traffic.

Your views please.
Regards
Stuart

Will definitely transfer heat :o , I’m sure I’ve heard of the same issue posted in here before, a simple solution would be a slightly crush in that area but far from ideal

A touch of judicious metal displacement to both pipes to create a clearance gap, just a few mm is better than contact...

Thanks.
I'm going to hang the connector pipe with silencer and nip it all up. Then view gap.

And that was a waste of my time!
Managed to produce a small gap after fitting silencer. But not enough to make me happy.
Then l found the shorter Mann 713/19 still doesn't fit with the filter cooler. It was impossible to photo the full issue. But the filter needs another five millimetres gap to line up.
What an effing palaver!

I have what I assume to be the same exhaust and the stainless water pipe, Here is the clearance on mine. I would expect you to be able to get similar, maybe you need to move the water pipe round a bit ?

Thanks for taking that photo.
But am reverting back to original exhaust. There is no way l'm getting that clearance. And trying to squash the stainless exhaust is going to be so difficult.
It is irrelevant now l can't even fit the smaller oil filter.

I have an early speedshop exhaust stu seems to clear the coolant pipe OK, there is the requirement of the shorter filter which brickwerks sell and fits OK. The only issues I have with mine is it hits the mustache bar when the engine rocks when starting or if I lunk the engine in the wrong gear, plus the flanges are mild steel on mine so theyve rusted out and I've had to weld and fill holes.

I had a break and rethink.
I can either adjust for coolant pipe or make space for shorter oil filter. I going to see if l can do a bit of both.
I can live with removing No 3 cylinder manifold to replace oil filter. Not ideal. But this is a nice exhaust.

After a cup of tea and a bit of deep and relaxing breaths.......... it all fits nicely.

My kind neighbour has a hydraulic press. So we marked up the exhaust pipe and heated the area cherry red. Then pressed a massive socket onto the pipe. With the press it was fairly easy to be honest. In fact we went a little too far in my opinion.

I still have a bit of an issue with the oil filter being so close. I can just about unscrew the filter and pull it aside. It does foul the exhaust still and needs a pull n push. But that makes my special oil filter removal cap obsolete now :? Back to a ratchet strap for me.

Image

Lots of clearance. But it closed up a little once all pipework was tightened.

Should l consider wrapping the exhaust near the coolant pipe? Or perhaps the coolant pipe?

Thanks to all. :ok

You saw how close mine was, It has been on there about 7 years now and it has never been a problem, Once you are moving along the air will flow around there and it should be fine, Wrap it if it makes you feel better though :)

Bit late to the party...I wouldn't have worried about a point contact between the header and the coolant pipe, I have the same thing on my wbx6, barely a mm gap.
Unless the two rattle due to expansion I'd have left it.
Some (all?) of the stainless coolant pipes require adjustment to fit nicely, some are better than others.
Personally I'd have tweaked the wet pipe or just left it alone.

OC203. It's 102mm high, against 100mm for the Mann version, so would be worse.
Speed shop recommend a smaller filter (for a Polo) - Mann W712/52. It's only 92mm high, but the pressure relief valve spec is different, hence the BW alternative.

The the Speedshop l have fitted was originally touching the coolant pipe.

Pressing that shape into the no 4 manifold gave similar clearance to yours. And, after a little bit of reaming out the flanges, allowed me to reposition the exhaust system for fitting the Mann 713/19 oil filter. It just about fits.
I'm happy with it. No wrapping required now.
