What is it for????

Post by BillyBus »

On the drivers side of my van, in the rear section, I have a long, built in storage 'trunk', which is basically a top lift compartment which runs alongside the bed area. Yesterday whilst I was rummaging about in it, I noticed a V cut into the wooden frame of the trunk, which seems to have been done to allow access to what seems to be a black screw top, on closer inspection there seems to be some sort of container back there. Its virtually impossible to even turn the screw top I can see, and the container is totally hidden behind the wooden paneling. I will try to get a photo of it, but wondered if anyone can tell me what it is!
I was a bit confused, as when I bought the van I was told it had power steering, but looking at the manual the steering fluid bottle is not where it should be, so I am wondering if this is it! I was pretty sure the van did not have power steering, by the feel of it, but since I had 2 new front tyres, I have been amazed at how easily it does steer, but that could just be the effect of the new tyres, maybe?
Any ideas as to what the mystery bottle is???

No...oh, wait...I never had any :)

The triangular recess in the O/S panelwork IS as T'Onion so rightly suggested usually for the fluid reservoir and pump for the rear wash/wipe.

I know from looking at the manuals where the power steering bottle should be, and there is definitely not one in that place that I can see, so I think probably not, but when I discovered this unknown bottle I was not sure what it was. I will get a pic of the engine when I next have it open.
Cheers

unless its been exteneded, from your pic, i'd say that is NOT the filler for the rear washer..... do you have a rear washer?

i'd be dipping something long and dippy into it to see whats in there.....

Close up of the visible screw top! There is not much room to get in there to open it!

I do have a rear washer, but have never had to fill it! I kind of assumed it ran off the front washer bottle supply?

As for dipping into it, I am not sure it is even possible to get enough access to open the bottle... but hey curiousity killed the cat, and I am not a cat so it should be fine!

Rear washer runs off a separate bottle and that looks most definitly like it! Front bottle could however been adapted to run the rear as well due to access, but it looks like the washer bottle that was fitted in the rear of the Devon ShuttleBus I used to service, and it was roughly in the same place.. :?

Thanks! Glad thats a mystery solved for me. I was having another look at it when I was fiddling about in the van this afternoon, there is no way on earth there is enough access to open it, let alone try to fill it!
So I hope Fox McIntyre is right and that the rear washer water comes from the front bottle, otherwise I am going to have a very dirty back window!

Cheers :ok
