Bodywork progressing on our 14” Syncro including factory window recesses and a later decision for factory (?) high top. I’ve read Michael’s high top thread on Samba and discovered this old German conversion doc (converted to English).
So for our high top I see three options. All need some work on rear of tin roof corner etc to allow high top to sit down there.
Options
1 Leave VW C post curved roof beam and tin roof behind it where it is.
2 unpick spot welds and move VW C post curved roof beam rear wards a bit (say 200mm ish)
3 replace VW C post curved roof beam with a straight box section again a bit rearward of original position. Also one or two same size or smaller beams further back to support high top floor.
So
3 is thinnest floor/roof section gaining storage space above.
Moving beam rearwards would also allow a storage box over engine and raised bed and seat without banging head too often !!
1 is cheapest option and least intervention structurally but loses high top storage space due to beam curve and also perhaps less potential for bed seat raise and under storage
Body Garage kinda favours 2 but is still a fair bit of work and loses space in an already compact high top. If I want 3 they say up to me and tell us what you want which I do understand. They’ve been good on bodywork so far.
This grp roof has the two metal box section hoops that will bolt into welded brackets at the original roof edge frame.
What’s been done before please ?
Does curved beam replaced with box section seem reasonable?
There’s a van at garage with same style roof perhaps from factory that has no C Beam and what looks like a flat B beam.
Not an engineer so would welcome advice please.
