Sloppy shift
Hi
Ive just swapped me clutch, (the aches and pains have almost gone), but I now have trouble selecting Reverse, 1st and 3rd. The first problem I found was the guide bush had slipped off the guide rod on the selector linkage , that helped a lot, but it it still not quite right. Ive looked in wiki, and it doesnt really help, as it was ok before, so isnt a wear issue, its a set up issue. Any hints on which / what to adjust? it all looks ok.
Is that clear? The only bit I disembled was the L shpaed bracket and the guide arm assembly where it goes into the gear box.

i had same prob, i slackened off the nut in the middle of the selector rod (think that the right name), its the long rod that runs the length of the van. and manually selected 3rd on the gear box while my brother put the gear lever into the 3rd position, then tightened the nut up and hey presto could get reverse

Yes, I will try and take some, trouble is the camera gets covered in oil. I did succeed in making it worse yesterday, but I think I know what it is. If I select 3rd with a spanner, then the gear shift locks up, it looks like the double nylon ball thing and its cup have gone "too far" and onto an angle that it cannot recover from via the stick. In this position, if I loosen the not holding the U shaped bracket to the gearbox selector shaft and straighten the ball / cup arrangement, then tighten again holding this in its new place, I THINK it may work.

what engine and gearbox is it?
on the wbx when you drop the bracket that holds the gear rod to the gearbox, before the knuckes it is easy to get it back the wrong side of the flange, then it will be 10mm out, and thats alot in the scheme of things under there, the equiv of 6" on the stick end

Mocki it looks like it could be a aircool gearbox as he said the double ball thing as are fitted on the gear selector for this gearbox.When i fitted this gearbox recently to my diesel engine i had trouble getting reverse.I found out that the first part of the rod coming off the the gear stick needed to be engaged correctly in its plastic joint between the gear stick and where its splines protudes through the chassis in its bush.When the second part of the rod that connects on to the double ball gear selector on the gearbox is pushed into the splines the angle of the gear rods are correct . I would advice using the haynes manual as it discribes the procedure to get the adjustment on the gear stick end and the double ball gear selector position for the rod.I replaced the double ball gear selector as mine was worn and bushes from JK.

Fixed!!!
Thanks for all the advice, in the end it was an assembly problem. A couple of splines out on the shaft that comes out of the gear box fixed the 1st and third problem, and I hadnt put a washer on the nut that holds the bracket on to the splined shaft, The nut digs in and the bracket is then wobbly.
