speedo cable

Good evening all its been a while......  :? ......i have just replaced the speedo cable with a new 1 from JK......when i took betty out for a test drive the speedo dial bounced and clicked ive tested the clocks with the cable connected to the clocks and the other end to a drill and it runs fine........could it be as simple as a routing issue.....the new cable followed the same route as the old one which gave up about 5 yrs ago any advice will be greatly appreciated..... many thanks.... :D

It could be that the little square hole in the grease cap on the left side is not driving the square end of the speedo cable inner consistently. If that's the case then you could try peening the area of the hole with a hammer against a lump of metal, to make it a better fit. Once it's working OK, seal the hole with a blob of silicone or polymer building adhesive, to stop water getting in, and prevent wear.

Presuming that you've bought a later type speedo cable with a push on connection and that it's a Gemo branded cable then you need to make sure the white nylon sleeve is fitted correctly and pushed right up to the white plastic push on connector at the speedo end of the cable like so.

hi there thanks for that ....i have replaced the grease cap with a new one and the little circlip at the same time......the cable is a good fit in the grease cap...... Image

that is the cable ive bought.....and will check thank you.......may i ask what purpose the sleeve has......i think i may have an idea what its for.... :?

Originally from VW the outer cable was made in 2 parts, it had a stiffer section at the top and a more flexible section towards the bottom.
Gemo made these for VW.
Gemo simplified the design aeons ago and replaced with what we have now.
Gemo are still the best cables but that white plastic sleeve simply stiffens up the cable nearest to the speedo to stop the needle jumping, it's simple and it works.
I have asked Gemo about producing a cable like was supplied to VW originally but they no longer have the tooling to do so, it's basically these or nothing.
That said, so long as the sleeve is in place, the cable isn't kinked, it's routed properly, attached to the chassis and the connection to the grease cap is good then you should be good to go.
We have a fix for the often missing chassis mount here.

All sorted now and thank you all for the advice........re routed cable and made sure sleeve was pushed up.....and that the grease cap was on square this time..... :rofl
