VW 1.8T 20 valve.

Post by geordie skydiver »

Can't seem to find any info about fitting this engine into a T25.

Has anyone done it? Whats the reason its not so popular?

I have a 220BHP one here, as I'm breaking my 20vT Scirocco.

I think its because the most popualar is 150bhp, which is lacking in the torque department. The 180+bhp versions are excellent but not as many about at sensible prices.

Hmmm, mine was a 150bhp to start with, then I made some mods, and it runs stand alone engine management with approx 220bhp.

I was going to run a syncro with a scooby engine, I wonder if this one is worth a try?

Assuming the low revs torque is enough are there any problems fitting this one in terms of space (especially in a syncro) and (I know nothing about this particular engine) would the diesel bits usually used to fit GTI etc engines actually fit? If all this does check out then good low revs torque plus more BHP at high revs might help overcome the limitations of the T25 gearbox that always seems to need a higher top. To avoid constipating it you would want to do something about the exhaust too.
Why does the not quite finished job before last always conspire with the not quite started job after next to make what you should be doing now harder?

Passat or a4 engine is the way to go, the golf 4 engine is very different and will be more difficult to mount. Everything will mount with diesek kit but the turbo might be in the way of the left engine mount. The gearing of the t3 should suit the engines because they are better at higher rpm's.

That looks really good, especially the exhaust - does look to be a very tight fit though.

only main problems you will have will be it will eat gearboxes, more so if there is any kind of turbo lag..
and clearence for the turbo.. but there are a range of turbo manifolds that could be fitted to uvercome this..
if you have a stand alone control setup then wiring wont be too much problem..
intercooling can be a pain due to space, and this is most important on the 20v turbo..

it will mount to a diesel gearbox
and if was fitted to a rocco then should be compatable with the van diesel mountings..
WHY T3's.... because they are just so adictive, and having one just aint enough

Depends how you drive my td has a huge amount of torque and thats not killed a syncro (week) gearbox yet.

It all depnds on the condition of the gearbox to start with really, an early high-mileage box will obviously be at most risk, or any box that has been run low on oil at some point.

When fitting a much more powerful engine, its probably worthwhile making sure you have a spare or have your original rebuilt - ensuring that known critical parts and bearings are definitely replaced, whatever they appear to be like when stripped.

With the diesel (52 degree) mounting kit, some of these engines present a n/s chassis rail clearance problem, and of course depending how low the turbo sits, the sump turbo oil return may not have anything like the fall the original installation has.
If in a Doka or Sika, the engine can be mounted pretty well upright without a problem, or in a van the engine lid height raised and space sacrificed for a more normal installation...

If anyone is interested, I have a large intercooler that fits underneath in front of the n/s rear cross member, custom-made for a T25. It would intercool almost any engine you would like to fit :) PM me if interested and I'll supply photos...

wasnt a torque thing i was on about realy..
torbo diesle engine's have as with any turbo engine a point where the turbo comes in, the 20vt though depending on what combination of turbo and control systems can realy kick in hard.. to the point were i have heard of them breaking cv joints/drive shafts.. and thats on boxes more robust than that used on a t3..

as has been said depends on the state of your gearbox, but in general t3 boxes wont last long with engines much over 150 bhp.
it can "generaly" be said that someone wanting big power engines will drive harder than someone thats happy with what ever engine comes fitted.. the boxes fitted to Aircooled t3's are better at taking bigger power but sadly dont have as good gear ratios.
WHY T3's.... because they are just so adictive, and having one just aint enough

Its low downs kick that kills gearboxs and the 20vales are poor at low revs witht the exception of the 225 and 240. My diesel is very aggresive from low revs and has not broke any of the transmission yet. In general rear engined vw boxes are strong just get neglected, when good they will handle anything a 20 valve will throw at them unless modifed.

  That's a lot of torque, so presumably first gear with slick tyres and a dropped clutch to do that?
