Exhaust falling off

Post by therealchrisgray »

Hi all, I could use some opinions so I'm not completely at the mercy of a mechanic.

Exhaust started blowing yesterday on a motorway run. I've done about 2k miles since changing the engine. (Diesel 1.9)

I got underneath it and found the obvious immediate culprit.

I'm wondering why this has happened, whether there is any movement in the exhaust system that's caused it, and notice that the tail pipe is vibrating quite violently.

Is there anyone can help me figure out this mounting?

Image

The green looks like it should be fixed to the blue but it moves freely about 1/4 inch up an down. So it seems there's very little supporting the exhaust system beyone where it connects to the manifold.

There are a couple of bolts (yellow line below) that look like they might be supposed to hold it but have sheared. I'm not 100% sure of that though, if anyone can shed any light.

Same image without any lines on.

See the size of the gap if I just let it hang. But if I push it up then the gap closes noticeably:

I'm guessing this movement has caused the bolts to the manifold to break or work loose, but if I'm right about the bolts in the bracket shearing then I'm at a loss as to what's caused that. Engine is fairly smooth for an old diesel.

Any insights or suggestions? Recommendations for someone I can take it to? I'm on the road just south of Bristol right now, have spanners etc but no power tools, so doubtful I can fix it myself by the roadside.

Thanks

Now I may not know much about diesels but I know pigeon poo welding when I see it. The silencer should be rubber mounted, not solidly.
The manifold should be tapped to take bolts/studs, looks like the threads are long gone so the holes need helicoils or inserts to recover it.

Thanks much, that looks like what I need. I'm trying not to be annoyed that I bought a whole bunch of odds and sods recently while the van was in for major surgery. Could have added that at the same time, if the mechanic (who had removed the entire exhaust during the engine change) had bothered to mention it. Deep breath, count to 10.

Plus I need a new manifold, apparently. I found a helpful mechanic locally who crawled around and confirmed the diagnosis with the extra bad news that the manifold is cracked.

Looks like at least 300 quid for a new one, I'll have to try and find one second-hand. But on the plus side it looks like the kind of job I can tackle on someone's drive. (If I can cope with visiting relatives again!)

Its the details that make the difference, some so-called specialists still don't seem to grasp this concept. Your mechanic may well have been clueless, there are early and late diesel exhausts iirc, then factor in that yours is a conversion from a wbx...
Get a wanted ad in the classifieds, there must be some JX manifolds going spare.
