Spare Wheel Carrier (Biggest Tyre Size)

Post by The Hairy Camper »

I just got new tyres all round for my alloys (215/60/r16).

I want to replace the tyre on my spare wheel in the carrier under the van too. It's the original van steel wheel, so I'm wondering what is the biggest I can fit under there that's readily available?

Cheers,
Hairy.

As far as I know you can't really get a larger than stock spare in without modification of the tray hinges and latch. At least my standard size spare barely fits. I've read somewhere that spare trays for slightly larger sizes exist, but I don't think the're easy to get hold of. Most people with large spares have them hanging from the back.

Thanks Rik. That's disappointing, but not the end of the world if it's just for the spare I suppose.

I think.a lot of people, and myself, just carry a stock sized wheel and tyre for the spare in the carrier, and run bigger wheels on the other 4. In any event, you can always juggle the punctured tyre around so the two drive wheels have the same sized wheel (On a 2wd obviously)

I am very interested in buying a carrier that will carry my 205x70x14 tyre David. I have been looking for one for years.

I'll be moving to a system like this in the near future. Although I don't really know up to what size difference on the front wheels it's fine?
