worth a punt?

Post by Che »

As the propex heating was removed prior to our ownership, now wanting to fit one.

Came across this and wondered if it's worth a punt? Would it fit? And worse case, how easy to repair?

The fact that you are having to ask such questions says to me that you do not have the confidence in your own ability to diagnose and repair the unit safely.

Well, thanks for the vote of confidence!

There's not a lot that would need fixing if not working from the little I've just read, just really needing to know if it will fit into my campervan and work off the current electrics that are still in place from where the old one was removed.

Just not sure what was in before. The gas pipes are there, the manual temperature gauge is there, same as the exhaust outlet and the warm air outlet

Put up some photos of the pipes and control unit.
If you get it for under 30 quid plus postage you will be damned lucky. Most still make decent money as spares/repairs.

However, some years back l did manage to win a job lot of VW T25 parts, including two front seats, a chrome rear ladder and exactly that model of propex. All for £110.00. But also with control unit and cabling. Took propex apart. Added 12 volts but no gas and switched to cold air only. Fan was jammed. Bent back metal surrounding fan blades and it spun up.

Hooked up gas. Switch control to hot air at maximum setting on the dial, and throwing out hot air in no time.
Did some cleaning and resealing of the combustion area and around case.

It has now been working for five years without fail. On Propex gas only though.

A decent and good working battery is important.

That's the thing, it's up for £9:95 or best offer plus postage or pick up. I'm only about 50 miles away, so it's pick up for me.

So price wise, it's a win, I have the original gas pipe work under the sink which branches off to where the heater should be. The exhaust is easily piped through the floor as the hole is already there, it's just the electrics I haven't seen yet.

The previous owner had the propex heater removed as not working and threw it away, so not sure which propex it was

I suspect that is a higher price offer than the starting bid. Only one way to find out, though!

Post a photo of the control panel. It will be a certain type for a compact 1600. Or go to Propex Leisure website.

Good luck. :ok

if it's 50 miles away, let the courrier do the miles it will be cheaper unless you have a very economical car. And you get two hours to do some prep and tinkering. ;)

Recently sent the exact same unit from my 1986   Autohomes syncro Komet to Propex leisure. Unit was not igniting. Refurbish and repair approximately one hundred pounds. Good company to deal with an unit now working perfectly.PhilmcC

Thanks all for the input.

So this is the control unit and also where it's going to fit , will the controller work with this heater? And any reason it won't fit to the fittings already in place?

I'm pretty certain that's a Heatsource 2000/2800 controller. Different wiring if l recall. From about 2010 - 2014, give a few years either side?
Speak to Propex Leisure. They are telephone friendly.

A Propex compact 1600 controller is as this photo... fitted in my camper.

So, spoke with Propex and my controller works with the compact 1600, so that's good news.

The bidding has started, not sure why someone would bid instead of the buy it now, as it could cost way more!

Just got to wait until Tuesday to see where things are with the bidding!
