Intermittent flashing oil light

Big lumps of metals and spanners. Including servicing and fluids.

Intermittent flashing oil light

Post by AlBundy »

Hi everyone,

I have a 1986 1.6 LHD diesel. It runs really nicely according to my local garage and has been well looked after.

In the last day or two, the red oil light has started flashing, but not consistently. It might go for a few minutes and then stop, or it might not go at all. It has always been hot weather when it had come on. The coolant is fine, there is plenty of oil and it was serviced less than 12 months ago, have only driven a thousand miles or so since. The temperature sensor has never showed excessive heat in the engine.

Is this something I need to worry about, or is it the sensor telling me I need to fix something?

Thanks in advance
Al

maybe a wiring issue, possibly on the low pressure oil switch or at the 14 pin plug at the dash, you want to check it out - if it was the high pressure oil switch then the buzzer of doom should sound, assuming that all the dynamic oil pressure warning system is correctly wired and working; if the high pressure has been earthed out so it can never come on then I'd definitely be checking the real world hot oil pressure with a wet gauge, only if you know op is okay can you ignore warning lights a little, but things change and what is fine one day might not necessarily be right the next day if a hose bursts or a gasket fails or a line comes off, that's why we have warning lights

As Aidan says check oil pressure with a wet gauge, can be caused by a worn bearing on the rear end of the intermediate shaft (vacuum pump end) engine out job,bit of a ball ache to fit and hone but cheap fix if the rest of the engine is good

Apologies, I am being daft, it's not the oil light, it's the temperature light. I just took the van out and was fine, no issues. Obviously that makes a difference, is this a common thing or should I still worry?

Check the coolant level in the expansion tank and top up to the top; carry a spare darlek cap anyway
