whag mpg can you get out of a syncro
what can a syncro tow what mpg and how much for right hand drive maybe a caravelle or crewcab. gonna be towing cars and campers just checking options before buying recovery truck if syncro up to job it might kill two birds with one stone ie tow truck people carrier any advice gratefully received
Most factory Syncro's, whether they are petrol or diesel will struggle to get above 20mpg on an average day (motorway and around town).
Also the only one with enough guts would probably be a 2.1 DJ (112bhp).
I recently took my 2.5 TDi Syncro over to Germany towing a trailer there at 75 and back (with another syncro on the back) at 70. Going over I managed to get 22mpg and on the way back it was down to 18mpg, but when you're pulling 2.2 Tons at that speed, I think it did rather well.
My daily figure is between 30 and 32mpg.

Trailer with brakes 2000 kg
Trailer without brakes 600 kg
Trailer nose weight 75 Kg
Weights: GVW 2500 Kg/4500 Kg/1300 Kg/1380 Kg
They're VW's figures which obviously look a bit low compared to some modern pickups that tow 3500 kg
...but equally obviously some tow 2500 Kg (or more?) and feel Ok about it.
Gradient given for 2000Kg towing weight is 12%

More from the manual
16"
90=27.1MPG
120=18.9MPG
Urban=19.7MPG
I think it can tow more weight, Athough my manual doesn't specify 16"s separately. McGill towed my 14" caravelle with a 16"! not to be recommended though.
It does say that gradient up to 12% = 2000KG
10%= 2500KG
for syncro with engine 57 and 82 KW

2.1DJ with LPG is the only way you will make the fuel filling pain less so..
And then towing with a 16" will be more expensive when something wears out/breaks..
I towed and Audi 100 avant back home on a HD trailer.. behind my 2wd.. didnt do bad, but was hard work.. sat at 100kmh for hours.. (670km) its got HD suspension and rated at the 2000kgs.. I reckon I was up to that easy.. wouldnt want to go that far again.. syncro would be a bit more stable I should imagine..
