VW LT28

Post by kermitdafwog »

Hello
I recently bought a "non running" 1979 LT28. The engine does run and sounds fine, no leaks or smoke but we were told that the van cuts out in 3rd and 4th gear. So Ive been using a local mobile mechanic to service everything in the hope that the issue is something simple - however, he is having issues with the brake and reverse light switches - he cant find where they are. Apparently VW didnt go pedal until a few years later so they should be on the gearbox and master cyclinder - is anyone able to confirm along with pictures perhaps? Would be very grateful for any other tips you want to chuck my way - I am sure this wont be my first question!
It has been suggested to replace the electronic fuel pump with a mechanical one to potentially solve the cutting out - ive not experienced it yet as yet to drive it due to it not having brake lights!!
Thanks in advance
Sam

Is it petrol and carb?

Is there an issue with the current brake and reverse lights ?

I'm assuming 1979 its a 2.0 petrol.
The brake switch is on the master cylinder, the reverse switch should be on the gearbox.. at least on mine

Make sure that you replace the fuel filter and lines.
Speaking from experience with mine, I rebuilt the B1 carb which made a big difference in its running. Make sure that the vaccum lines are all installed correctly as if they aren't it makes it run like a*** and it will bog and stall..
I assume you have the manual choke on it? Make sure that it works and isn't sticking on.

Cheers guys
davidoft1 - the brake lights and reverse lights arent working - the bulbs have been changed.  will pass your comments on to my mechanic.  Yes its petrol with webber carbs

Stesaw  - sounds like some good advice, I will pass this on to the mechanic too, many thanks for your comments.

Someone suggesting switching the van to an electric ignition system and to replace the fuel tank breather - would you say these avenues are worth exploring?
Thanks again

You could swap to electric ignition to get rid of the points, thats for a more modern style.. maybe more reliable.. less maintenance for sure.
You said it has webber carbs?? as far as I know LT petrols were either B1 pierburg for 2.0 and B2 carb for 2.4 engines.
you say you have carbs or was that a typo?
