Starting engine from cold
Always had this problem, whereby engine is reluctant to stay running when starting from cold. Using the cold start procedure, ie depress accelerator pedal once or twice before cranking. Engine fires but unless I tap the accelerator during this process to encourage more revs the engine cuts out. After about 30secs doing this the engine ticks over by itself and when warmed up a bit another press on the accelarator reduces the revs to slower revs and standard tickover. Is this normal for these vehicles or is there something more I can do and check.

The choke might not be set right when you depress the throttle to reset it to a closed state when cold.
Check out james akers videos on it, shows you how the set the choke up.. albeit with the carb off the engine.. but it will give you and idea if anything is amiss.

During cold start procedure what happens at the carburetor when you press the accelerator, can this be viewed or will removing the air filter and carb cover during this process to view any movement affect it.

removing the inlet pancake to observe function is fine, be aware of dropping owt in there mind, like the nuts or washers removed when taking the inlet off top of carb

Thanks, seems to be working ok now, recent things i done include removing fuel pipe from pump to carb and spraying carb cleaner into inlet where cone filter is, hopefully this will clear anything.. Also revisited the cold start procedure, pressed accelerator pedal and released slowly. In the past I may have released it quickly. Engine fired but did not remain running until third attempt. Oil presure light off but charge light on due to low revs. Resisted temptation to increase revs at this stage and left engine running, drove off, bit of a stutter but soon settled down and charge light off. Went on same run as last week when I had issues, this time all ok so hopefully sorted. In conclusion, as well as the other actions I did, I think interrupting the cold start procedure by tapping accelerator before autochoke had completed its function may have contributed to my problems.

You do know you can remove the cone filter easily dont you ?

Thanks Steve, I was a bit reluctant as did not want to possibly damage it by pushing something up the tube to pull it out.

You can use a screw of about the same diameter and screw it in a few turns, just enough for the thread to engage the tangs, and gently
wiggle it out.

Thanks, will give it a go if my problem returns or even before as routine maintenance. Is any of the filter visible. I could not see anything protruding from the pipe. I am also guessing that the wider part of the cone is nearer the end I think James Akers in one if his vids showed this.

No, not usually, mine is flush with the end of the tube. I'm not sure how far these can be pushed up the tube to be honest, and yes pointy end goes in first.

Still having same issues occassonally. Removed and Cleaned cone filter today using long screw as pictured, soaked in carb cleaner and found although not blocked it did have a slight mucky residue which carb cleaner removed. Have posted pics to aid others if needed.

Bit more information needed please ref Pierburg 2e3/4 Carb. Should the butterfly flap visible at top of carb when lid removed move. Mine sits in the open position (vertical) at all times. Monitoted it today on doing cold start procedure and then when engine hot, no movement even when accelerating locally at carb. Just done some more research I believe the flap I refer too is the choke plate, am i correct in thinking that during cold start procedure, depressing the accelerator pedal closes this flap enriching the mixture, then as engine warms up the other choke parts open it up again.

Update. Starting from Cold using recommended procedure as above, Choke plate remained in open position so manually closed it a couple of times and left it closed. Started engine and fired first time idling fast. Left engine warm up, pressed accelerator pedal a couple of times, revs dropped to normal idle speed. Viewed Choke plate and it had opened by itself, so some part must be working. Any other pointers welcomed.
