Weber Idf floats - chasing my tail!!

Post by Heaver »

Just wondered if anyone else has had this issue. If not, it may help someone in the future.

Was setting up a new distributor the other day, so left the ignition on and fuel pump running. Then notice fuel poring into the main chamber on one carb (engine not running).

After checking float heights a million times, thought it might be the needle valve, so bought new and replaced.

After scratching my head and almost going insane after the fault still persisted… I thought to weigh the floats.

Float from good carb = 17g’s
Float from bad carb = 28g’s

Euro carbs website says they weigh approx 13g’s!!!

And there was no sloshing or sound of fluid in the float.

I know it’s been running rich for a while and always thought… at least it will keep the engine cool (CU2.0 Aircooled).

Not sure what the float is made of, but tempted to take some weight off it and try it. They seem to be made of a closed sell foam?!?!

I’ve have them for a few years, so am not expecting a replacement from the supplier…. But might call them to notify them to see if they can stop it reoccurring.

Weird!!

I wonder if the 'foam' has actually soaked up some fuel and added the weight?
Perhaps leave it in a dry location for a while, then re-weigh and see if it has evaporated off?

No idea how much fuel would need to be soaked up to add that weight, or if even possible. I'm just a little curious  :D
