Hi Max
It’s a 1.9 litre petrol Air cooled engine.
It only happens in heavy rains and having to drive through standing water.
I’ve had the ht leads ,distributor cap and points changed.
But it’s made it better but not cured.
I’ve no mud flaps on the front, wondering if that would help.
I can’t find waterproof covers for the distributor etc
Was wondering about some sort of diversion metal work beneath the engine but concerned that would effect the cooling air flow.
I don’t think it’s a fuel problem.
Regards
Ray

I'm not that familiar with Aircooled engines. But pretty certain the layout is nearly identical to watercooled bar a few coolant pipes.
Auto electrics in wet conditions are always going to be an issue. But not normally affecting anything in engine bay on these vehicles where it is all tucked up high and well away from road weather. Has your vehicle got ALL the appropriate engine bay tinware installed?
Due to it's design the fuel tanks rust from above. Or it could be fuel seal deterioration around the filler entry. Have you checked the clear fuel filter just behind the petrol tank?

Hello and welcome,
One of the specific idiosyncracies of the CU engine is the placement of the fuel pump..
This video will show you where the pump is and so on..
Might be worth checking...
and make sure all the tinware is in place....

Thanks for your response Max
I am convinced that the problem is from water penetration, I have only just purchased the Devon Camper so I am not sure what metalwork should be in place to protect the electrics from water spray.
Maybe I need to find someone who could tell me.
I live in Maidenhead Berkshire.

As I understand it you should have a rubber seal around the engine bay with an Aircooled engine to create a temperature difference to help cool the engine. If thats all there I doubt you'd be getting water in the engine bay to the point where it would affect your electrics.
Take some pictures of the engine bay and post them here so we can see if there is anything amiss

As Stesaw says, the upper and lower half of the CU engine is divided by tinware and a rubber seal. If all these are in place water shouldn't splash from below on to the electrics, which are all in the upper half. However, in heavy rain a lot of water is drawn into the air s scoops in the rear corners of the body. This could get to some of the wirING in the engine bay.
Does the problem clear soon after rain stops, or several days later. I feel that if it was a water in fuel issue, it would last a long time, and may not clear till the filter and maybe even carb has been replaced/cleaned.
Both of my vans run a little rough in heavy rain, but not enough to worry about, and usually ok if up to running temperature.

hi Rosie n Jim
Thanks for your response.
The symptons are as follows.
In heavy rains with lots of spray the engine starts to misfire and power is drasticaly reduced, on the 2 occasions ive limped onto the hard shoulder and got it to tick over after which i assume the engine warmth has dried out the dampness and ive limped slowly along being a nusience to lorry drivers and got off the motorway and gradualy the engine regains power with me keeping well away from standing water

Maybe worth giving the appropriate parts a good dose of WD40 to see if that improves the problem.
