1.9 DG Bad Engine Tick
Hello chaps,
I’ve been attempting to diagnose a loud ticking noise on my 1.9 DG - I’ll post a video of the ticking it seems to be coming from the left side of the engine - as you can see in the video (from how nice and shiny it is) I’ve recently replaced the vac advance pump, distributor cap and cleaned up the rotor as I had a few suggestions it could be the vac advance. However this has made no difference.
Any help is much appreciated- in terms of driving, performance hasn’t really changed much a little bit more sluggish perhaps but it’s hard to tell as the tick’s been going on for a while! Tick Noise Video

Re: 1.9 DG Bad Engine Tick
I’m wondering if the valves gaps need setting, under the rocker covers. Sounds more tippy-tappy rather than lower engine knocking of the rod, that’s all.

Re: 1.9 DG Bad Engine Tick
There should be no gaps on the valve adjustment this isn't an Aircooled engine
But yeah, valve adjustment might need doing by the sound of it,

Re: 1.9 DG Bad Engine Tick
Is this a lack of oil to one of the hydraulic tappets, I have a similar noise now and again which previous posts by others point to this. Maybe worth checking oil level or need of an oil change.

Re: 1.9 DG Bad Engine Tick
That is tappet rattle , if its just had a oil and filter change , was the correct (Mineral 15/40 ) oil fitted and the correct filter (Mann W719/12) then check the adjusters on the rocker arm haven’t come loose , and that the rocker arm isnt loose
It’s not uncommon for a oil change and a good run to solve this

Re: 1.9 DG Bad Engine Tick
Thanks for all the replies chaps, however the suggestion of adjusting the valves has already been done by me. A few months ago I had a lifter blow on the right side and replaced all lifters on the rhs and adjusted valves too I adjusted the valves on the left side too while doing this, so they should all be set correctly - after I did this the engine was running beautifully and then a month or so later the tapping started up. Could this be a lifter on the way out?

Re: 1.9 DG Bad Engine Tick
What did you set them to? Depending on the answer, my advice is to adjust again to a different setting, eg if you did 2 turns, change to 1.5, and vice versa. If you did any other setting, change to one of these. Failing that, back them off to just touching, take for a good drive, then screw in 1/2 turn, drive again, repeat process twice more. You'll end up at 1.5 turns, and know that any air is purged. If it doesn't cure it, you have at least one duff lifter. You'll also be able to tell if one goes spongy very quickly (it's probably that one). Which brand lifter did you fit?

I’ve set them all to two turns so I’ll give what you suggested a try. I fitted the lifters stocked by Just Kampers - can’t remember the brand off the top of my head! When the rattle first started I checked to see if any lifters were spongy on the left side but they were all rock solid. So hopefully altering the valves with solve the problem!

Re: 1.9 DG Bad Engine Tick
We had a lifter that would rain down in less than a week and then sound like a machine gun. Our son borrowed the camper and thrashed it up the motorway from South Coast to Liverpool and back at speeds way above my recommendation.
It has been silent ever since.

Well failing the valve adjustment maybe I’ll take her to the local track and give her a run round haha
Re: 1.9 DG Bad Engine Tick
The first time l read about drained down lifter's, the general consensus was to drive as if you had just stolen it...
