I have a T3 with a JX 1.6TD engine 5 speed gearbox.
After long journeys this summer with no issues the engine has started to feel like it is over revving when changing gear either on the flat or going up hill.
The closest sound that I can describe is like when an automatic gearbox has trouble changing gear and over revs.
Engine ticks over fine. The LDA holds suction when tested but not sure if working when driving.
I am thinking it is an issue with Turbo ( but no whistling - maybe blocked pipes?) or the injection. Not sure where to start?
JX 1.6TD over revving? What could be the issue?

Sounds like either a clutch issue or possibly a frayed throttle cable to

Thanks for reply. Clutch is good and throttle cable is not catching.
Have just been reading Baxters Brickyard thread on Definitive smokey JX engines.
I had an inkling that the engine was smelling more of Diesel in the exhaust. I am going to run a few more tests but after reading the JX smoking thread I am veering towards injection pump issues.

Hows the Oil consumption... Could be early signs of turbo seals failing and the engine runing on the enigine oil.. Eventually resulting in runaway... Which you don't want........

Oil Consumption has been fine. What are runaway symptoms?

Just being going through old posts on Smokey JX engines.
From Harry Mann: Diesels can run on oil as well as diesel fuel (which is also a refined oil).. if oil is getting into the inlet tract anywhere, in sufficient quantity, the engine 'might' 'run-on' - that is accelerate without any throttle being applied, usually very noisy, with lots of grey/black smoke and noise - and potentially dangerous!
Maybe what I am seeing is the run on. I haven't noticed that much smoke but then I am looking the other way. Oil consumption has been minimal.
I am going to take it the mechanic who put the engine and turbo in many years ago and see what they say.

Re: JX 1.6TD over revving? What could be the issue?
Good plan. I’ve had a (non vw) diesel runaway, not something I’d want to repeat. Only happened at higher revs, so in my case could be brought under control by standing on the brakes. You might invest in a CO2 extinguisher if you’re driving much before getting time with the mechanic. Empty it into the air intake snorkel as a last resort if a runaway can’t be controlled with brakes. Runaways sometimes develop extra power and might overwhelm the clutch, but co2 deprives the combustion process of oxygen.
Have you ever seen an unhappy fool?
