2.1 DJ Wont start when hot and possible fuel issue
Hi all,
Looking for some help with this one, my 2.1 WBX has just started playing up, first symptom was when warm it started to almost stall when accelerating in 1st. Felt like it was misfiring and very lumpy, had to give it high revs in order to stop it from stalling. When on a run it seemed fine. Stopped at the garage then it wouldn't start. Turning over but not firing. Had to wait for it to cool down before it would eventually fire again. Had suggestions of Temp 2 sender but not sure how this solely be the cause ot this type of issue.
Does anyone have any ideas where I should start looking before I start throwing money at this.
Help appreciated!

One or multiple injectors leaking and flooding cylinders. Time to have them tested.

Possible TCi starting to fail
Re: 2.1 DJ Wont start when hot and possible fuel issue
Are these replaceable? And is thst the best way to test if it is this causing the issue?

Dare I say -
Check the distributor cap, leads and rotor.
I have had hot start issues before where the car has been long overdue a service.
But I also agree with checking the earths.
In fact check all your connectors and wiring.
The van is around 40 years old, so the wiring will have deteriorated and picked up a lot of tarnish, muck, and corrosion.
Time for a good strip and clean of all your electical plugs.
I would say a virtual service without the fluid changes.
Check the distributor cap, leads and rotor.

Yep you are right and the van is overdue a service to be honest. Leads look fine but will check plugs cables, earth's etc.
Question. What is preferred oil for a 2.1?
Re: 2.1 DJ Wont start when hot and possible fuel issue
Not enough air perhaps.
I'm not familiar with the engine but as it has a dizzy it must be petrol.
Don't know if it has a choke cable to get stuck but it will need less air when it gets hot.
Clogged air filter?
Stuck choke cable?
Weak mixture?
Try adjusting the mixture screw on the carb...

Re: 2.1 DJ Wont start when hot and possible fuel issue
Thanks but no carb on this engine, currently still trawling through the Bentley manual to understand a little bit more of how this all works. Just seems like there could be lots of things mostly I cannot test myself so I will probably try and take it to someone who has the time and knowhow, which I have neither.
Re: 2.1 DJ Wont start when hot and possible fuel issue
Give your pride and joy a proper service first. Including plugs, leads, dissy cap and rotor.
When you waited for engine to cool before restarting did it run normally again?
The Temp 2 sensor is easily tested. Its in Bentley. As are various tests around the DJ to establish the fault.
However, aside from my previous post about checking injectors, I would start checking colour of spark plugs and by testing spark plug leads (again in Bentley).
Then check dissy cap and rotor for wear.
If fault continues plug together the two leads connected to the idle control magic (by coil) box then try starting again.

I wish my engine bay looked like!
I've had a bit of time looking at the engine this evening and I think I do need to clean up some of the contacts and earths. everything is pretty gunked up and im slightly ashamed that Ive let it get to this. But house renovation and baby took priority . Anyway, as you mentioned I have check over the leads and they look clean as the weren't changed too long ago and its barely done anything since. Cap and rotor also look fine, and I will check plugs tomorrow.
What I have noticed this evening is that it has no problem starting or idling from cold. But I can tell there is a issue as soon as I apply the throttle fully and quickly, there is a pause before it picks up. Now I don't know what it was like before but it does feel like it struggles. As the engine begins to warm up and I repeat, engaging the throttle quickly it worsens and feels like it will stall and backfires, which isnt through exhaust it sounded like it came through the air intake manifold. It definitely gets worse as it gets warmer. I can also smells fuel. Tomorrow I will check plugs see how they are looking and perhaps even change them.
Also some other concerning finds this evening.....
Tucked behind the controller I found these 2 doing nothing. I can only assume they have always been like this. I am looking at the Bentley AFC diagram page 249 and I cant quite work out what they should be attached to?
There is also a 5 cable coming from the wires that go to the injectors that is green which was also tied around these. (yellow cap) THese I am certain have always been like this.
Next, I have also found a black pipe that was just hanging in a small hole just to the right of the controller... again im not sure what this is meant to be doing? again this has probably always been like this.
Can someone also tell me what the 2nd sensor is that is next to the sensor II which I already changed. Just wondering what this sensor does and should it also be checked?
For reference....

Re: 2.1 DJ Wont start when hot and possible fuel issue
Sorry to add another thing to check!
Had a similar problem in another vehicle, turned out to be a fuel line that was collapsing under load.
Started fine and ran ok up to half throttle, then petered out, and sometimes cut out.
Stopped, pipe sprang back open and car would start again.
Took ages to get to the bottom of it!
Good luck.
