Starter Motor Rebuild

Post by The Hairy Camper »

I've been rebuilding one of my starter motors recently. I changed the Brushes and cleaned the insides, but forgot to change the Bush(es). So that was today's job.

I was led to believe that there was a Bush in the Bell Housing, as well as at the end of the starter. But when I looked inside the bell housing today, I found no sign of any Bush there...Is the Bell Housing Bush just for Petrol's? Mine is a Diesel.

I found the Bush on the back of the starter casing and pressed it out easily enough.

I also noticed this on the front of the starter, is this the second bush? If so, how do I get it out? It also looks like a different size to the other one, but I could be wrong?

Appreciate any help.

Cheers,
HC.

Petrols have the bush in the bellhousing. Pretty sure as the diesel ones dont in the bellhousing as they have the supported spindle from the semi circle housing that the starter has, I suppose though that's where the bush is for those. Afraid I'd have no idea how to get the one out the end of a diesel starter, other than stripping it down entirely to get at it with a drift or something.

Cheers Stesaw, I just googled the Petrol Starters and that makes sense. The Petrol starters don't have the housing you mentioned that the Diesel one's do.

I think I'm going to have fun if i need to remove the bearings to get at it. Might as well change the bearings too if I do that! :rofl
