Petrol gauge is constantly on empty??

Post by veedubtub »

Hello,
My petrol gauge is constantly on, no fuel in the tank. I left the bus standing for a week with about £10's worth of petrol in it. It's a 2L 1981 Aircooled T25. Has anyone had this problem before, or know what I can check? does it work of a float in the tank or are there any fuses to check? i've put a load of petrol in it and still no banana.
Thanks,
James.

Hiya veedubtub, my gauge is the same, I'm going to renew the fuel sender unit in the tank when I get the chance.

There is no fuse, the T25 is noted for its erratic fuel gauge. Mine has been f+rt+ng about for years, but has finally given up the ghost.

It is possible the float has a hole in it

Mocki said in a previous reply to me that the sender units can stick, but this is more than a sticking unit...check and see if your voltage stabiliser is OK (looks like a microchip, located on the printed circuit ribbon behind the clocks, held in place by a self tapper)

As I said before, nothing else for me to do but renew the unit.

Yep - mine too - completely dead. Kaput. Knackered.

1980 air cooled...

Was going to change the unit, and have a brand new sender form JK in the van, but after being told on here it was a complete nightmare of a job for novices, and then reading that it took one member 4 hours to get back on  I decided I could live with watching the odometer, and use the trip as back-up.

Thought I had it cracked with the gas conversion....but in true t25 stlye, these aren't reliable either, according to steve. Mine seems to be doing a pretty fair job, but I still use that trip. :)

dropping the fuel tank isn't that bad. empty it first, run it down til nearly empty, then drain. If there are two of you it should be a doddle, one of you will need long arms to reach into the wheel arches. I did mine on my own with a jack and sheet of wood between jack and tank.

fuel gauge

Post by angry vanagon »

hi the tank is a easy job to do on the t25 about 1hr out and back in there's only 2 bolts on the tank straps and 2 vacuum pipe's to the expansion tanks in the arches and the filler neck to disconnect make sure you run it down low on fuel and buy 2m of 5.5mm hose to replace the breather pipes which will be perished before you remove it when its out bridge out the 2 connections on the sender plug if it then works the sender is shot if not the wiring between the sender and the clocks is faulty or the voltage regulator on the clocks is shot this just pushes on to circuit board at the back of the clocks and can be swapped for any from 80's 90's vw's this can be tested for functionality with a multimeter the centre leg should be 10v with the engine running hope this helps

Mine's been on the blink for ages. I have resigned myself to it. I keep my eye on the mileage, and always carry a gallon in a can.

Someone mentioned the Tank Vacuming - I think I have the same problem - well maybe anyway.

What's the remedy?

Thanks

Hello,
Mine ended up just being the plug to the gauge behind the dash, I took it off and gave it a clean up, worked a treat!
