1Y Injection Pump Wiring

Hi everyone, I know this has been asked before on the forums, but I'm having trouble getting the 1Y engine I've fitted to start up.

It's a Bosch pump that came with the 1Y.

I think I might have missed something with the injection pump wiring? I've only connected the fuel shut off wire (to the van's black wire) but left all the other wires hanging free for now. That's what other threads seemed to advise?

I've primed the fuel system, added the glow plug resistor, but not put in the delay relay timer yet (been told it should at least start up without it for now?).

Van turns over and starts for about a second or 2 but then shuts off? Is there something I've missed with the immobiliser?

That’s not an immobilised pump , you will need the heater plugs working via the timer , have you bled the injectors ?

If it’s not run and it’s been apart it will need to get the air out of the system

Hi davidoft, when you say timer, do you mean the timer delay relay? If so, will it not start up at all without it? Just for now? I just want to see if everything works!

The engine turns over and tries to start. I did just notice that one of the injectors doesn't seem to be getting any/much fuel when i bled them.

The choke Oldie? Not sure i did? Just what's in the photos.

It isn't a choke - it slightly advances the timing. Have you connected it up to the cold start cable? ( Same as the original engine)
My 1Y needed the advance even on a warm engine until I made the glow plugs come on even when the engine was hot.

No, I read on other threads that it was ok to leave the choke cable off. I will have a go now.

I have already connected up a 600ohm resistor for glow plugs. Does it need the resistor and advanced timing?

I found that mine didn't need the cold start once I had the glow plugs on every time, that isn't to say that yours doesn't also, try operating it at the pump manually - you will have to disconnect the (non ) automatic cold first for that. I couldn't get the automatic gubbins to work at all on mine so converted it to the cable operated version.
How long are your glow plugs on for with the 600Ω resistor? You might need a longer glow with a higher resistor.

Just tried connecting the advanced timing to the choke cable. Tried starting while pulling on choke cable but no joy. Choke cable was able to move it too.

Glow plugs stay on for about 20 seconds Oldie. Do you think thatvis enough?

Provided the glow plugs are all functioning that is enough time. You did change the glow plugs whilst you had easier access to them before you fitted the engine? You may well have air in the lines/pump still, worth bleeding through a few times.
(I've got to do the same with my boat engine, I know that a fuel line has perished and it has all drained down.)

Yep, installed 4 brand new glow plugs whilst it was out. Inspected all the injectors and fitted new flame traps too.

I'm still wondering if i need to connect anything else on the injection pump?

Will give bleeding the lines another go tomorrow

Did you start your van with just that connected?

Connect the heater plug timer , it will not start the way you think without it , it will start eventually without it , the black wire from the ignition that you have attached to the fuel solenoid is enough , foot to the floor on the throttle , keep it to the floor and release it slowly in line with how the revs pickup as the fuel system purges the air
