4 speed gearbox to 5 speed gearbox?

Post by gwolf65 »

Hi,as my 4 speed box is starting to crunch a little going into second i'm toying with the idea of changing it to a 5 speed.Does anyone know if these are just a simple swap or do i need a specific box to replace my 4 speed?
Dg 1.9 water cooled engine 1986.Not sure of my gearbox code.

I've done exactly this and i wouldnt bother again! Not very much difference in the higher gearing on the top end like you'd think, tho a bit faster thru the box but it takes ages to get used to a dogleg first gear and it never really feels nice like me old 4 speed.
Get your current box rebuilt or get a new one, dont bother with a 5 speeds just my advice!! 8)

I thought a 5 speed might be better for a higher cruising speed. If no great improvement as you say then it's not really worth the hassle of swapping everything over.I'd probably get away with a gasket set and some new baulk rings, which i'll leave until the backend of the year. Thanks for the advice though.

From what Ive heard, the 5 speed isnt as tough a box, so doesnt last as long, and the ratios are really just closer together rather than taller, as PEET says. Just stick with the 4 speed, and be thankful youre not driving a syncro if you find the gearing too short. My syncro has a top speed of 75mph and the engines going like the clappers at that speed (1.6td engine).
