Give us some pictures and I think we'll be a lot more help.
It *SOUNDS* OK and won't engage straight away. If it's moving back out of it's own accord then it's not seized.

jack the rear of the van up so both rear wheels are off the ground and chock the front wheels, support with axle stands, with the actuator off the frame and the handbrake off and gearbox in nuetral try spinning the rear wheels whilst pushing the diff lock pin in,if its working you shouldnt be able to spin the wheels, you will probally find itll move a bit wich is taking up freeplay then move a bit more when it actually locks,it only locks when not under load so bare this in mind, spin out the tell tell switch and test for continuity, then bridge the wires that go on the switch to see if the dash lights up,if the diff lock doesnt move far enough lubricate with a qaulity oil on the shaft and in the switch hole till it moves, worst case scenario, box out, bell housing off, dismantle diff lock parts, but this is rare ,cj.
bought some real off roaders!!!!!!!
