DG Temperature Gauge Sender

I have recently fitted a Golf MK3 GTI engine into my originally DG van (although I never had it with that engine) and the temp guage is sitting high:



despite the ECU which shares the temp sensor saying it is 90c:





I assume the Golf temp sender is the wrong range for the gauge in my dash. Luckily I have a spare sensor socket (late style).

Can anyone tell me what temperate range sensor I need, and if this blue one from Brickwerks is correct for my dash gauge?

no that's for injection temp2 is for the ECU

Interesting that the ODB socket has been installed along with the engine, I wouldn't have expected many converters to do that, good job.

Of course, once the sender is changed the data being sent to the ECU will change along with values shown in Vagcom. This will likely affect warm up and potentially engine running, IF the sender has a different range.

How do you know the gauge is working correctly ?

Luckily the water flange has 2 sensor sockets so can use the spare and swap the temp wire for dash over.

Out of interest the sensors have 2 connections, is one for dash daube and one for earth? I thought temp usually earths via the sensor itself.

they fit in a plastic housing so can't earth through sender
yes one side is earth.

Really? I would have expected most converters to retain it.
On my first one I left it in the loom in the engine bay, but it's a bit prone to wet getting in (housed in waterproof bag, but still not ideal). Subsequently I've used the existing glow plug warning light wire from the black junction box and repurposed it as the k line. Then put the immobiliser box and OBD port under the dash clocks, and key halo ring on the ignition. Simples!

As for the temp sender, definitely two senders is the way to go. Reuse the original one for the gauge, and the GTi one for the ECU.

OK so I fitted a black sender VW Part Number:251 919 501 D -https://www.brickwerks.co.uk/coolant-te ... green.html but my temp guage is if anything even slightly higher at 90c:



I checked the specs of the sender online and it seems it is rated as:
Temperature Range 25 degree C to 80 degree C
Resistance [Ohm] = 1000
Resistance [Ohm] = 148

Now given the AGG GTI engine I have installed runs at 90c is this sender not out of range?

I checked the OHM as the engine cooled and these are the readings:

90c - 111.3
85 - 126.5
80 - 153.4
75 - 175
70 - 212
65 - 252.3
60 - 303

I checked the dash gauge at 80c and it is exactly in the middle of the LED where I would like it to sit at 90c.

Voltage at the sender is 10.87v, is this an issue?

So now I am a bit stumped. I assume my clock gauge is matched to the black sender as I think the van was a DG originally. Is there another sender that would work with my engine temps and the current dash gauge? Do I need to MOD it with resistor?

but a DG stat is 87 so pretty much the same.
check your regulator is 10V

My sender is receiving 10.88v, is that likely to be causing the issue?

well its not right should be a smidge over 10V

it will cause it to be high but maybe not all the problem but you ned to fix it first.

did you ever dunk your new sender in hot water to measure it?

I will order one from BW and see if that helps. I did not test the sensor no, but it is almost identical readings with the ECU temp sender I have right next to it. This lets me compare the temps with what the ECU is receiving from its own sender and the resistance change of my black Febi one. At 90c my black sender is applying 111Ohm of resistance, is this correct?

Is it not a case that the DG would run cooler (80c) which puts that in middle of the LED which is where the gauge was when my temp was at 80c, but going to 90c would be very hot for the DG and put the gauge where I see at idle?

It is a Febi sensor, I always assumed Febi was a good make?

A DG has an 87C stat as standard fit
why would it run at 80?

read the blurb on the Brickwerks site as to installing their regulator.

mine was a bad contact you can remove regularor and test it before assuming its faulty like I did.

Could a short to earth somewhere cause this?

I noticed a while back a very slight tingle when bare skin brushed up against my exhaust whilst doing work under the van.I tested the battery for draw with IGN off and measured 0.080A. That was with everything off apart from my tracker. I assumed this was acceptable parasitic draw?
