Quick Rust treatment

Took the sliding cover off the van to grease the mechanism, not taken it off before and while it looked perfect with the cover on it had some rust.

Nothing major but I can't just leave this, if I did I would probably forget and have a rusty hole next year or the year after.

This is my normal quick rust treatment, it's not perfect but it's 80% in 20% of the time and it works to slow down rust.

Diamond cutting disc in a dremel and take most of the rust off, this is accurate and does not spoil paint around like wet and dry or a wire brush.

Vactan, if it's not a hot day dry with a hair drier ( this one is 30 years old don't make em like this anymore)

rattle can sprayed into lid and then with a fine brush paint a few coats

covers back on tomorrow when it's hardened off a bit.

All in about 3 hours, as said not perfect but slowed it down massively and anybody can do this to slow their rust down.

I have even done rust like this in mid winter outdoors, as long as it's not raining it's possible and better than leaving it.

What did you do with the vactan after it had gone off? I found it went like sunburnt skin and I couldn’t find anywhere whether your where supposed to leave it, key it, remove loose flakes, wash it off, remove it all etc

From my experience with Vactan, it needs to be applied in a relatively thin coat. Did you give yours a thick covering?

Thin coat and paint over it, it's a primer and rust converter.
As said if you apply it when it's cold it does not cure properly, needs to be hot or heat it.

I can't get on with the stuff, it leaves a horrible waxy residue.
I always use Fertan. It's brilliant. It has the same active ingredient (tannic acid), but without the waxiness. It's water based and can be used on a rainy day or on wet rust - it actually works better this way. Leave it at least 24 hours to work, keeping it damp with a fine water spray (or reapply a bit more Fertan), then wipe off residue and any excess with a damp cloth. Once dry, fill prime and paint as required.

My point is don't just put off treating rust, you often see vans with a rusty scab and you think FFS I could have treated that in half an hour

Happy to try fertan but any rust killer is fine just get on with it.

As arnie says DO IT, DO IT NOW.
