Eber works but doesnt!!

Post by Bendyknees »

Hi all
At the moment im touring rural ireland and am makin the most of my eber(was averaging -3 for most of last week perched on the top of a hill). The eber works perfectly if its set to 1 or 2(just got a rehostat)and gently puffs all night going through its various stages to keep the chill out. However when i get up in the morning and am having a wash i like to crank it up a bit to toast myself as im getting dried/dressed. However when i do this ie number 3-4-maxiboost the eber winds itself up and blows an intense gale at a great temp for about 20 mins then shuts itself down(after cool down cycle)will start straight back up again if i turn off and on, but during the cool down cycle i get cold legs!! Is not a voltage issue as i was hooked up wit my jumbo charger connected to my batteries and im guessing its not fuel as when i initially turn it on after staggering back from the pub and set it to low it can be boosting for much longer before it winds itself down. Any1 got any ideas??

Doesnt seem to be but most of the time its a gale round here so and smoke is blown away quitte quick. Why wat do you have in mind. Can smell combustion gasses now and again if stood outside but not that bad

Air getting it to the lines some how , does it shut down if it tickling away at 1 and you up it to 2 or only if it cranked up to 3 or 4

Same happens to me sometimes.

I pretty much sorted it by balancing the inlet and outlet exhuast.

I think it just got too hot when the system wasn't balanced.

I think i have buggered mine again by sticking an exhuast on it. Its nice and quiet but won't ramp up. Also, when in the alps two weeks ago it wouldn't go on any setting for more than 10 minutes!

I wish i knew how to get the eber balanced properly - how can you tell ?

I had a exhaust on mine , it did nt like it one bit , i think it even damaged the diesel gauze filter, soon took it off,
balancing the exhaust and the air inlet is (or so i'm told) is just making sure that the two pipes are the same lenght ?

I think you're right - but im not sure if the same applies when an exhuast is fitted.

Bendyknees - have you checked to see if your inlet and output pipes are the same length ?

could be right there Ringo , cos i took my exhaust off a diesel preheater and the air intake was a plastic black pipe about 8in long and the exhaust pipe was about 3 foot then the silencer and then a 8in pipe on that, will look into it at some point cos it was really quiet with the little silencer on .

The silencer is great - it kind of lets me put the heater on in places where i would be embarrassed normally (like when were kipping in a car park on the sly!).

I really need to dig out the eber manual and get this sorted once and for all.

Sorry to hog your thread bendy knees - i hope its not so cold for you!

I dont mind a bit of hogging ringo. Right spent another warmish night in the van. Have to get this sorted pretty quick because i have chilblains now and have been told to keep myself toasty for a while.
Just to recap onion my eber works fine on setting 1 or 2 will run all night going through the cycles to keep my van at the right temp. As soon as i wind it up any more it cranks itself up and runs for about 40 mins to an hour then decides that its feelin tired and deserves a rest and does its cool down sequence. If when its finished that i turn it off and on again it will fire straight up and if on 1 or 2 good for the duration, 3,4 or boost and its has a strop after about 40 mins an shuts down.(timed it yesterday, and i say about 40 mins as i got cold and went for sum soup, only to come back and the bugger had stopped while i was away)
Spent a few hours trying to sort it yesterday but got cold an peesed off wit it. Now have an inlet and exhaust of exactly the same length(mesured wit a piece of hairy string  ) my inlet an exhaust are both about 8 inchs long pointin in differant directions, and i gave them a good clean inside(still same symtoms). my battery voltage is good at the batteries(have checked at eber fuse before and was about 11.8 when switched on),and im presuming that its not due to voltage drop along the length of wire as it starts up fine and it uses no power when running compared to on startup. Cant be a fuel issue as im running the eber off a t piece from my fuel line, and the van starts and runs perfectly. Am starting to run out of ideas again(apart from standind at the back of the van swearing and threatening it). Have read the manual, many times and doesnt seem to help.
I only want it to get toasty every now and again, sometimes 10 degrees is still just a bit nippy u know.

so does it not run if you just leave it at 3 ? you could try taking the guaze screen out and cleaning that , take the glow plug out and pull the sceen out using your finger , its a tight fit but it will come out , if its curfuffled then they are about £12 on ebay , i replaced mine cos it would run right

have just come back in from the cold.
My findings. I have found the heater!!
After much cursing in the 30mph wind and wit 1 foot in a puddle have eventually managed to get the gauze out. Was a very tight fit indeed. looks pretty tatty, and coked up. Is there supposed to be an end on it as if it were a gauze top hat or is it just suppose to be a gauze tube??
If ive done it right there should be a pic of my gauze below.

Any advance on a new guaze?? My glow plug looks like new btw.
