5 speed gearbox oil level

Post by andyasj »

Normally gearboxes are filled to overflowing but a local guy who just does up T25's has told me that this is not correct for this box. The correct level is about 10-15 mm below the fill hole. Overfilling can cause oil seals to fail. Is he correct? I have filled mine to what he told me but I worry![/b]

he's right I think, the early boxes (just on Aircooled I think, called 091) were filled to the bottom of the filler hole, later changes to internals for the 091/1 (4 speed) reduced the oil capacity but the filler hole was left in the same place. I have filled an 091/1 to the fill hole and it spewed the oil out of the input shaft seal (box was on way out anyway). my new box has been filled to 15mm below the hole, you need to make a little dipstick,
will check same applies to five speed box tonight if no one else has posted by then.
