sos inverness - non starter

Post by Rusty Red »

Help! First van!
I'm Dougal, the wifes Vicki who bought the van Red and Rusty 1980 2l AC Caravelle Hi Top non runner, off Ebay.
Small catch its in Inverness we're in Edinburgh.
Have by hook and crook and friends of friends got it dragged to local MOT garage, cut a long story short 2 months baby on christmas day bla bla clutch and gearbox sorted. Now its resisting all attempts of the garage in Inverness to start, also AA and RAC, it seems have had a go. local VW man is going round too. Thought I'd see if anyone had any ideas, miracles or suggestions. Not getting spark is what it comes down to, is there anything silly? They're not daft but this things older than most of them!

do what someone's done to mine m8,,, ditch the electronic ignition and get a points distributer and disconnect the leccy ign plug. then all you need is a 12v supply and a coil to guarantee sparks.

I'll have a stab in the dark and say hall effect switch, same thing happened to mine. Loads of other possibilities but any good auto electrician should be able to trace the fault to be honest, could just be dirt on something. good luck

No Spark

I had similar troubles last year, turned out to be the coil with a winding breaking down, if not that, try the ignition module. They are the same as out of the 1985 - 1990 Polo's electonic ignition, so theres a cheap swap for elimination, hall sender , had one go on a Golf, it was just temperamental and worked sometimes and sometimes not! Check all the wires and earthy bits
