Oil consumption

Post by excalibur »

Ever since I have had my van, which is a year now, it has been very heavy on oil..................it goes through a litre every 1000 miles.

There are no leaks, it doesn't seem to be breathing heavy, I have compression tested it and everything is fine. It's a 1700 oil burner, 75K on the clock with a supposidly short motor fitted at 50K as the original run low on oil and siezed.

Its got to the stage where it aint worth using decent oil, just throw in some cheap 20/50 from the supermarket as with this high a consumption it is changing its oil by itself every 6 weeks.

Obviously, a 1989 van , worth £250 I aint going to throw lots of money at, just wondered if anyone had come across this before and is it going to get expensive? It hasn't got any worse in the last 12 months, but it wont get better on its own

Mine is a petrol 1.9 water cooled.
Uses virtually no oil at all. Keep checking it but never needs any.

like mine was, 1.6d. using more oil than diesel and no obvious smoke(get someone to follow you down a motorway at night) to find whether it smokes, the headlights show it up. anyway the head is cracked between the valves, which means a new head, but an engine swap is easier. put a 1.9 golf, passat, or seat engine in. £150 from your local "loot" paper.
