Over heated!

We were driving along and we started over heading and we think our water pumps gone, and also the belt has gone anyone got any ideas to get us home? Any advice would be great currently at the side of the road near Milton Keynes so we're not going anywhere

Oh dear....Did you stop as soon as the temp' guage and red light came on, any coolant loss/steam, if you turn the water pump by hand does it feel rough. Maybe the pump belt has snapped and the pump is ok?

Yes, it only takes moments for the temperature to shoot up once the belt snaps and stops turning the pump. What makes you think the pump has gone? You might be fine if you just fit your spare belt and top up your coolant. You do have a spare belt don't you?

Hey guys little update on the alternated belt there are three gogs the middle one is fine but the bottom left one the collect pump drive belt has come loose when it happens the light came on we pulled over straight away and it was steaming a lot we tried to tighten it up but it seems you need a special tool so we were unable to the water was then dripping from this drive belt and on the floor the fan also did not come on but it has in the past at the member we are leaving the van over night and are hoping to get towed home tomoro if anybody is in the Milton Keynes area and knows a cheap tow or could even help us we would be very grateful

I know its not the answer you want to hear... but some practical advice for future refrence... it might be time to join a recovery company. I am with RAC, just to have piece of mind if this does happen again.

Yes I agree on the breakdown recovery issue. It puts you more or less complete control should your by definition* trusty steed break down. You may get it fixed on the spot but if not you will have a choice of where you get it fixed. At home is usually best as you can fix or get it fixed at your own pace. Incidentally if you break down on a motorway without cover the choice is likely to be taken out of your hands for you but at your cost.
In my opinion breakdown recovery is one of the few services today which provide anything like a reasonable value for money for, shall we say, mature vehicles.

You are going to need to get a lift to work now, time to rethink the idea of having an old vehicle as a daily driver !

The cooling fan would not come on if the pump has failed, because the coolant would not reach the radiator, where the thermostat is situated. I hope you have contacted a breakdown service and are on your way home.
You cannot cut corners to save money on these old vehicles. Breakdown cover is essential and as has been said many times before on here, a budget of £2K a year should be planned for to ensure things continue to work, unless you are a good mechanic and have a workshop at home.
Also, make sure that you buy a top quality replacement pump from Brickwerks or other reputable company. If you buy a cheap replacement it is unlikely to last very long. Good luck.

Thanks everyone we're back home we joined the RAC and got a tow home not the best option but we had no choice my fault for being a complete numpty and not getting areound to getting brake down cover. Oh well lesson definitely learned. We have already looked at the water pump on brickworks and will be buying it from them only the best parts for our piglet. The next step is to learn how to fix it myself I would rather do it myself so I can learn how it all works so I'm going to be studying the wiki and YouTube to see if I can do it. We have a few jobs that we should really do now we need new coolent pipes so I'm thinking we just change it all at the same time and renew the coolent which will obviously need doing as most of our coolent now makes a trail from Milton Keynes to Warwick. It's a big job but I'm confident I can learn if there is anybody who would be happy to help send me a dm and I'll give you our adress thanks again everyone at least piglet is at home on the drive and not on the side of the road.
