Gearbox whine question

Post by dekhelia »

5-speed gearbox on my 1.9 AAZ conversion whines/drones in 4th and 5th gears. The gearstick also rattles in 4th gear, rattling the gearstick knob. Could this be due to poor adjustment of the selector, or is it just general internal gearbox wear? The van has done 290000km on the same gearbox - as far as I am aware. It had its oil changed a couple of thousand kms ago. Is it time to think about rebuild/replacement? I'm not that bothered about the whine, only that it disturbs the otherwise peaceful progress above 50mph. Thoughts?

I had a low drone/rumble on my 5 speed and the gear shift would rattle (unless I kept my hand on it)- it turned out to be the main bearings, so rebuilt gearbox.

I agree .... sadly it's only going to get worse and may 'develope' at an inopportune moment leading to common phrases such as 'That feckin van !!' and such-like from the passenger seat and outbreaks of matrimonial unpleasantness (they take it as a failure on your part NOT the van's ... been there  )

Out of interest which came first .. The whine or the oil change ? I'm guessing the oil change revealed a lovely silver Christmas tree on the magnetic plug ? If not, which oil was used ? Had someone added a thicker oil before to shut the thing up (like Ye Olde sawdust in the gearbox trick to sell a car with a knackered box trick).

There is an informative article here.....https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?p=8054097

My gearbox has this whine too, 4th and 5th gear it reminds me of the sound you get when reversing a "normal" car at speed. The article has a decent diagram and description of the 5 speed box and its workings.
