I doubt they are M9..... more like M8, you can use a standard high tensile M8 bolt and cut the head off..

Or go and ask VW..... they may well be available..

Sure someone will be along in a minute that can tell you where/what can be used as well

email me your VIN number to chris.pattinson@westyorkshire.vwcv.co.uk and I will check what size studs they are, and the price of genuine for you

I was surprised when I looked at how cheap some genuine parts are compared to spurious ones.........................not all though but worth a look

many skinned knuckles, 15 coffees and small quantity of golden virginia later, i have managed to get the last stud out.
would be nice to have some spare as i really dont want to do that again! (need to re use them on some different heads see)
been through a very large box of nuts & bolts i have lying around and i found one that i thought fitted, but it wouldn't torque up, tried M8's and it aint them ( its M8 thread showing out of the head, that the heat exchanger mounts on, but not what threads into the head )
doesn't matter now its all done, but just wanted to know.

better off fitting bolts all round make the head off job easier in the future, if you can stretch to it tungsten bolts are abot £35 for all 8.

Just a thought, Murdoch,
it could be that the original M8 threads were stripped by a previous owner and tapped out to a slightly bigger size, or had threaded inserts put in to reclaim them, one exh stud on mine was like that, it may not even be a metric thread, could be U.N.C. or something else imperial, a fasteners stockist could tell you what threads they are if you take one with you, just an idea mate, Wasserleaker.

I emailed murdoch from work earlier, whilst looking at the parts list.

The studs are indeed M9 on one end, M8 on the other (these krauts have some strange ideas).............unfortunatly not a VW stock item anymore and no idea where, without having a set turned up, you would get replacements

BTW murdoch, when I looked up the history for your vehicle it said there had not been a reg number alocated and it was still awaiting handover to the customer. Looks like you have a brand new motor there mate :D

Dont worry.................a lot of the older type 2's come up like that, they never got on the system (we only had spectrum zx's back the  )
