Yes can anyone help?
MY 1.6 non turbo engine [ out of golf] may be replaced in next few months, but with what? I am tired of busses passing me...
Diesel 1.9 turbo or non turbo... even bigger? 2.1 2.4? will they fit?
or petrol with lpg conversion and what size?
Help me choose with reasons why.... and do I need new gearbox with them? How much will it cost? 1k, 2k, 3k,
Also who will fit it for me? I live in North Wales. Can travel if necessary, but need to sleep in van whilst its done, if possible.
new engine wanted but which one?

Have you looked at the thread second from the top... http://archive.club8090.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=194 and the other 5 pages in this forum

Yes I did read them and good they may be I am still none the wiser, not being mechanically minded tdi`s. ide`s, and the rest , mean nothing.
I want AN ENGINE , that will give me 40+mpg, diesel, no agro, easy to maintain, with appropriate gearbox. faster and more powerful than my present 1.6 diesel, 40mpg but bloody slow, especially up hills. As I live in the hills 1000 ft high a bit more guts would be truly appreciated.
The write ups go into details of electric detais, steering lock changes etc, on newer engines etc .which I am lost on.
The main requirement is no after installation problems. I want it all sorted for me from someone who has done it, fitted reliable unit and knows what their doing.
A tall order but I am sure he / she exhists on this site, as the info I have always had in the past has been bril.

I've done a lot of thinking about this poptop and from my research i guess you've got the following viable options:
1.6 JX TD - Standard fitment on T25's, mk2 Golfs, Passats. My mate has one of these in his van. He says its underpowered and i think theres a question mark over how much longer its going to last as it has to be worked hard. Probably your cheapest TD option.
1.9 TD AAZ - Lots of people seem to have done this one. If i was going diesel this'd be my choice. Its not got a huge amount more power than the 1.6 but its got more torque and its less stressed. Dont expect it to be fast though and i doubt you'd crack much more than 35mpg. I had a Mk3 Golf with this engine in and it never got more than 42-43 mpg. Its a simple lump though and pretty reliable with no fancy electrics.
TDi - The engine out of the mid-late 90's Golfs, Passats. Minimum of 90bhp so its got enough go about it. Electrics are fairly complex though for a first time DIYer or even an advanced spanner man/women! Reliable and in the Passats and Golfs its more economical than the AAZ so at a guess i'd say it'll be the same in the T25. Serious expenditure i'm guessing.
Peugeot/Citroen XUD - I've ran these engines a lot in Citroen BX's and i know them pretty well. I know somebody on this site runs one with much sucess. They have 90bhp with the turbo version, they are unbelievably cheap to buy and easy to find. The secret with these engines are to keep them cool. If you do this the headgaskets will last for ever. No fancy electrics on this. Some will say steer clear of this engine but i've ran BX's and Xantia's with 300k on the clock without the head ever coming off.
Digging around on the net will probably give you some other options too but if i was you i'd go for the AAZ or JX option.

Thanks for reply, much appreciated. My partner had a passat estate, early 90`s model, td or tdi, and got 60 mpg, very reliable, did 240k before she sold it and still going. Dont mind paying for one off investment as long as its going to last. more power would be good. Can I get recon engine? do I need better gearbox, clutch? and cost, any ideas, fully fitted ?.How long to do all this work?
cheers all

If the passat was an early 90's model it could have been the 1.6TD version. My old boss had a 1600td passat which was very economical.
Fuel consumption is very much a personal thing though. All depends how you drive. My cars tend to get driven fairly enthusiastically so my fuel consumption is average at best.
To be honest cost wise i've had figures around the £2000 mark for a semi-pro conversion for an AAZ.
I've also had a rough professional estimate of £7000 to convert my syncro and have the gearbox suitably changed.
I'd recommend you ring one of the specialists in this field for a chat with somebody with the experience. The guys at Elite VW in Essex would give you some advice.
