Van's been running a little rough since the very nice AA man got it going a couple of weeks ago, so I thought I would check the timing. Connected a strobe to battery hooked it on to number 1 HT lead and the notches are nowhere to be seen on the pulley wheel thing.
"This is odd", I thought. So, whopped the spark plug out, felt for compression while cranking by hand and took the notch to uppermost and aligned with crankcase join (as per Mr Haynes' instructions). Checked that the rotor arm and dizzy body notch were both pointing at number 1 cylinder HT lead segment on cap. Started it up again (after removing vacuum pipe), attached strobe once more and still notch not visible. Well when I say not visible, that's not entirely true; I could just about see it at the bottom of the wheel!?!?
So, attached strobe to next HT lead (offside nearest front) and the notch appears dead centre at the top.
I really am terribly confused about this. Number 1 cylinder is right hand side of engine (as you look from behind) and nearest alternator, is it not?
I'm sure there is some terribly simple explanation for this, but I'll be buggered if I know what it is.
HELP, before I'm driven to drink (and if no one will drive me, I'll just have to walk).
