Diesel head repair.

From what I read my 1.7 head can not be resurfaced (Bently). Does this mean it can't be repaired/welded/skimed and the like or am I barking?

even though vw say you can't plenty of vw diesels are going about with skimmed heads. Welding them is like pissing in the wind.
