Tail light issues

Post by craig_a »

Hi All,

I'm new to the forum so please excuse me if I don't do anything right!

I've just got my first Type 25, like most no doubt I have a snagging list I am trying to work through to get the van sorted out a bit - replacing / fixing the horn the first success! :D

Anyway, the rear passenger (near side) tail light wasn't working, thought it might just be a bulb so unscrewed the unit to find no bulb in place! And actually the bulb holder unit was broken so thought this was the issue - ordered and fitted a new one from VW Heritage, still not working....
Then looked at the wiring connectors and on the nearside it seems there is a wire missing in connector port 4? Checked the offside which is working fine and all 6 ports have wires going into them. When I started comparing I can see two wires have been put into one connector on the nearside but both look like the same wire?

Can anyone help please as I'm quite confused? I have taken pics of both the connectors but it doesn't seem to let me upload then so can send these if anyone thinks they can help but wants to visually see what I'm banging on about!

Even if anyone can send me pics of what there connectors look like so I can compare what is a "normal" set up that could be very useful.

Thanks in advance
Craig

If your van is a UK model there is no rear fog on the nearside, no holder, no bulb, no wire. But the light box has a place for it.
On the offside it has a holder and a wire.
Is this what you mean?

Ahh ok, that might explain it then, I thought it was just a tail light but perhaps it is a fog light. I have no owners manual or naything o have literally just been working my way through switches to try and work out what works what.

Yes Van is Uk model. Registered 88 but built late 86 I believe but hoping a birth certifcate will confirm this but VW have a massive waiting list for these.

Light switch on the left of the speedo when you doubleclick it to the left is this turning on the fog light then? Is one click just for the normal headlights and tailights?

Thanks for replying, really appreciate all the help I can get!

Headlight switch has knurled wheel below it (which adjusts instrument lighting), first position is side and tail lights, second position is headlights.
Fog lights are on a separate switch.

...and it's a three position switch, first is front Fog,auxilliary or driving lamps, second is rear fog.

headlights have to be on for both the fogs to work
