Heater fan problem

Post by Jody78 »

Hi Everyone,

The heater fan on our T25 has just packed up. I have heard that it is an epic job! We are based in Cornwall. Does anyone recommend someone who could fix it for us for a reasonable price? I think it is probably beyond the average DIY mechanic!

Cheers

Jody

You know it's not such a hard job, it takes time (8? Hrs) but you will know more about your van. If you pay someone it'll take time still but money too.

Yes its not that bad, just need to be methodical and hope that your heater box (which houses the fan motor) isn't glued together :?

Bit of a myth attached to getting the dash out. Not hard to do - more a ploddy job. Plus you get the opportunit to replace washer pipes, grease wiper mechanism, tidy wiring and fit under-dash speakers if you wish. Its also advisable to insulate under there to reduce road noise and heat loss.

Its alright if you have a dry interior, antifreeze spray and thick clothes on :)

Consider doing my PWM mod to the blower too. Gets rid of the resistors. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GzJ8N1Rqp8&t=19s" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Ever since I bought my van three years ago, the heaters fan motor has been temperamental, but when it fails to start a judicious thump on the ducting below the heater controls has always coaxed it into life. I suppose one day it will fail to work, but at present it helps me feel at one with the machine...

Doing my blower was a revelation. Very quick to de-mist the windscreen, and no more getting cold when I stop at lights, or slow traffic in town. Makes it a much more comfortable place.

I've done this mod and it's really worth doing, the wiki video helped with which parts to buy and how to install . Would really recommend it.

Thanks guys. Maybe I should try to do it myself. Does anyone know of a YouTube video or instructions?

We are based near Truro.

What happens if the fan is glued in? Are you screwed at that point? Can you check it all works before you put it all back together.

Just to add to my problems.... now when I turn the ignition key, it doesn't always start. So for example I try to start it and nothing at all. Lights on the dash ( glow plug lights etc fine), but won't turn the engine. Nothing at all. If I turn the key again or maybe a third time it tends to start. Something weird going on. Anyone had this before?

Cheers

Testing? Easy if you test blower on battery before fitting. Its not a hard job at all, its just a ploddy job. Use of a PWM controller to wire it up is even easier. I would however fit at least some foil bubble-wrap type insulation when the dash is out. So much heat is lost through the front of the vehicle and no car manufacturer would make such an omission these days. All owners will vouch for the temperature drop between the middle and front of the vehicle overnight. You will not regret efforts made to insulate, and indeed tidy wiring and washer pipe replacement.

Non-start likely to be failing ignition switch or loose connection on starter.

If you get stuck, report back :)
