Door mirrors
My driver's side door mirrors looking worse for ware passenger side seems ok I bought a new set but broke the driver side these seem poorer than the ones on the van which are possibly original
I won't be buying a new one for the off side door but I'm wondering can I remove the glass? There seems to be a groove between where the glass sits and the main body I wonder if this can be praised apart I'm thinking of replacing the nearside old for new and experimenting.

As with so many after-market parts, comparing original and replacement mrrors like-for-ilke is interesting. For a start they're about half the weight! General and detail quality is very poor including moulding lines visible, mirror glass slightly distorts, ball-joint under-engineered. The black finish on the body mount flakes off after about a year or so.
I don't believe it's possible to remove the mirror glass from the body. I'd find a second-hand original from eBay rather than use a crappy repro having tried them myself.

Re: Door mirrors
The original alternative brand are Hagus, they are exactly the same as the vw originals. I cant believe how many other ( cheap ) brands there are for parts these days !

Re: Door mirrors
Tip. The Hagus replacement mirrors are ok'ish. However, you will still need to transfer the tension springs from the old ones into the new mirrors, as the new springs are too thin and do not hold mirrors steady and they flap down above 30mph.

Re: Door mirrors
I just added an extra 10mm nut to compress the spring a little more and had no probs since.

Re: Door mirrors
I tried that but it didn't work as the springs are just too thin and weak.CovKid wrote:I just added an extra 10mm nut to compress the spring a little more and had no probs since.

Re: Door mirrors
Thanks folks:
Land rover I've herd about that way any particular series year model?
Managed to get the glass out of the original n/s mirror not got round to trying it in the o/s yet (cold & wet weathers fault) took a bit of prising the plastic strip off (above the glass) as its in a slot soaking in a dish of hot water helped and starting at the bottom corner where it fixes to the door is best place to start then along long side opposite with the glass removed the rest was easy. the small bulls eye mirror will be at the top right instead of the bottom left corner if it does fit but soon fit a 2nd one if needed.
Keeping the springs as well. So if all else fails it'll be a new set of cheap mirrors and stronger springs fitted.

Re: Door mirrors
I was forced to fit a cheap wingmirror last summer as a quick fix prior to our hols, the wingmirror is now somewhere on the M6 as it fell off without warning, it wasn't the mechanism at fault but the cheap plastic moulding all I have got left is the foot plate with a hole in it, I am going to look into the land-rover mod too

Re: Door mirrors
Another vote for the landrover defender mirrors here. Much better view as they have a curved mirror and they're a very sturdy design.

My cunning plan worked unfortunately I was reversing out of a gate watching my reverse camera put a small amount of lock on just as the mirror I'd fixed was in line with the top of the gate post now no mirror. While the experiment was in progress I did find I prefer the bulls eyes at the top instead of at the bottom of the main mirror. Which is where the nearside bull's eye ended up when i put it on the off side.
Re fitted the cheap ones (2 for £17 Inc P&P) someone mentioned talking of flapping about lol they ok till going over 40mph try 30 into an headwind.
What are the brackets I'll need to fit landy mirror's and where to look for suppliers?
Finally proper land rover or third party.?
Thanks.
